Ive been listening to this amp(50 watt and 100 watt versions) very closely and it really nails that Van halen 1(first album)crunch/distortion then any amp out there.

I had a different experience too . Take it for what its worth. You may feel differently. But I trust myself implicitly.

it sounded nasally, muddy and lifeless after owning it for 1 year.

The Chupa is a good amp, but I ended up getting rid of mine pretty fast. To my ear, I couldnt get the clarity I needed to hear and it seemed under powered compared to a lot of my amps. I had the 50 watter. Maybe I just didnt spend enough time dailling it in? But thats just my experience.
My Mojave Peacemaker captures the VH tone way better in my opinion . But it has that certain midrange thing you hear in VH tone, and it feels different too...way more spongy with a looser bottom end. Not a super tight amp. Really fun to play I think. I hope this helps some.......Steve

I had a 100 watt chup, it sounded pretty good but was too dry and barky for that tone. Didn't have any sag. Plus the clipping diode circuit was too fizzy and had a nasty aftertone on sustained chords as they faded out. I got better evh tones from a Metro '68 and my friedmans even the dirty shirley.

Thanks for the replies, the van halen 1 tone(first album) is very edgy and very bright with no sag.Van halen's tone changed from album to album,im talking the first album tone are we on the same page.

If I did purchase the amp I wouldnt be using EL34s,I would by using 6CA7 which are brighter and more open/aggressive sounding.EL34's to me(which ive never liked) are compressed(muddy) and less open, less bright.

I think that the chupa clips sound pretty cool but I don't hear that much of vh tones. It is Marshall style amp so its part way there but there are many others that get closer. How about the plexi brown Superlead amp from ceriatone? From looking AT the layout of it I would bet that it could get closer vh tones then the chupa.

Just listen to the gain/distotion on van halen 1(first album) and then compare it to the gain/distortion on the chupacabra. The Chupa has it.......

I bought the first Van Halen record the first week it was released in 78 Nitro. Ive owned it on Vinyl, 8 track, CD, MP3. Ive listened to it every way thats possible. I know the tone on that album. I know its different than the other VH releases. I know all that. I also know that the Chupacabra I had in no way had that sound in it. Period. I am not however, obsessed as some are with achieving that sound. It sounds like you had your mind made up that you were gonna get the Chup before you started soliciting opinions.

gtrwun,Its good to ask opinions on a amp thats hard to find and to try. Thanks for the opinions, will I buy the amp,I dont know.

I hear lots of good things about the Chupa. Was it a flavor of the month or something?

I have listened to the chupa in many youtube clips and it definitely has tha kirk hammett tonez.

I had a different experience. What does that mean?

But really, I had the 50 watt chupacabra for a few months, and I don't think the VH 1 tone came to mind at all when I played that amp.
