This is the one amp I wish I had not sold. I used it when I was doing the cover band thing. Tekbow is gonna yell at me for this but, I loved the XL mod. Would have not kept it without it. Had a friend that had the Hot Rod without the mod and I did not like it. Basically it is like having a depth knob and having it prettty much maxed. You could also have it removed and have the actual depth circuit put in with a pot so you can adjust it to your liking. This amp covers alot of ground and is very loud for a 50w amp. Clean ch will go from pristine to very dirty. Lead channel will go from dirty to almost metal territory(close enough for most). I never had the master past 4 live. For fear of the other guys killing me. The effects loop is not meant for pedals, fyi. I would not hesitate to own this amp again.
nah i don't shout. much.. lol but did your friend have a 50 or a 50+ because they both came with the XL mod. so it's hard to compare a 50+ with to a 50 without.
what GSX is saying about it is right though, think of it like the resonance control on the 5150 hardwired on full all the time.
but one mans poison and all that. so i can give you my view of it and maybe GSX can give you his
I find that it made the amp a little wooly, escpecially at higher volumes, like a kind of muffled quality and it rolled off the top end a little too much for my liking. basically i had to have the treble and presence near maxed out quite often. but that depended on the guitar. with an axis, no issues, with a mcarty it got a little inarticulate, and thats a mcarty with a BKP nailbomb in it.
i just had it on, and i'll take back what i said about it not do clean so well. i still don't think it does pristine, but it can do very very clean. takes a screamer really well for SRV stuff too.
it likes pedals, and i have a lot.
The FX loop isn't meant for pedals, but there are ways around this.
best thing to do is go play it, and see whether you like the mod or not. at the end of the do if you do get it. if you don't still get it, because it's a simple mod to change and i've heard stories of mike and bill walking a tech thru it on the phone. I'ts basically swapping out a resistor and cap for a single resistor. in fact i got a pic somewhere
