Chance for trade to get a Hotrod 50 xl+ Soldano

Two mediocre mass produced amps for one handbuilt raging slab of awesomness? I would do it in a heartbeat, but I'm kinda a Soldano fanboy, used to own that exact same amp, and will get another one someday.
Sound wise, I think the Soldano would kill those other two, not sure about the dollar value of the trade though.

I would do it in a Heartbeat.

But I am such a gear whore!
I still think its a good trade.

i think you are getting screwed, the R50 is not the SLO tone, and even modded, it will still get "close"

the eggy renegade has some of the best cleans i have ever heard in an amplifier.

tremping trade since it bares mike's name, but i wouldnt do it. the rig you have now is more versatile.

I would make that deal any day of the week if I were you.

I'd do it. 50 XL+ doesn't sound exactly like an SLO, but they aren't too far off either. Plus you're getting the matching cab.

Yeah, agreed. It does NOT sound like a SLO, but its still definitely better than both the Renegade and the Legacy.

do it, crazy good amp, i have one, but get rid of the XL mod, it takes away from the amp.

And to be honest, just cause it has mikey's name doesn't mean it'll only do one thing, that amp with the right volume and tone from the guitar and eq'd well is the most versatile amp i've owned. the only thing it won't do is sparkling clean, but hey, can't have everything

Have you played it?

For me, it would all come down to what I liked more.

I think it's fine, dollar wise, but do you like it?

goin over this weekend to try it..
I still love the renegade boosted but Im gonna try this..

This is the one amp I wish I had not sold. I used it when I was doing the cover band thing. Tekbow is gonna yell at me for this but, I loved the XL mod. Would have not kept it without it. Had a friend that had the Hot Rod without the mod and I did not like it. Basically it is like having a depth knob and having it prettty much maxed. You could also have it removed and have the actual depth circuit put in with a pot so you can adjust it to your liking. This amp covers alot of ground and is very loud for a 50w amp. Clean ch will go from pristine to very dirty. Lead channel will go from dirty to almost metal territory(close enough for most). I never had the master past 4 live. For fear of the other guys killing me. The effects loop is not meant for pedals, fyi. I would not hesitate to own this amp again.

nah i don't shout. much.. lol but did your friend have a 50 or a 50+ because they both came with the XL mod. so it's hard to compare a 50+ with to a 50 without.

what GSX is saying about it is right though, think of it like the resonance control on the 5150 hardwired on full all the time.

but one mans poison and all that. so i can give you my view of it and maybe GSX can give you his

I find that it made the amp a little wooly, escpecially at higher volumes, like a kind of muffled quality and it rolled off the top end a little too much for my liking. basically i had to have the treble and presence near maxed out quite often. but that depended on the guitar. with an axis, no issues, with a mcarty it got a little inarticulate, and thats a mcarty with a BKP nailbomb in it.

i just had it on, and i'll take back what i said about it not do clean so well. i still don't think it does pristine, but it can do very very clean. takes a screamer really well for SRV stuff too.

it likes pedals, and i have a lot.

The FX loop isn't meant for pedals, but there are ways around this.

best thing to do is go play it, and see whether you like the mod or not. at the end of the do if you do get it. if you don't still get it, because it's a simple mod to change and i've heard stories of mike and bill walking a tech thru it on the phone. I'ts basically swapping out a resistor and cap for a single resistor. in fact i got a pic somewhere

My buddy had the 50 not the +. We would compare my lead channel to his. Maybe it is not fair comparison but I much preffered the more bottom end of the XL. I used all EMG's at the time, never experienced any muffled, flubiness. Top end seemed very smooth to me. I run a lot of presence on damn near everything depending on speakers. Maybe your right about pristine cleans but as pristine as I would ever need. Love the ability of the clean to go from pretty damn clean to dirty. Im sure the guitar and pickups used would be the deciding factor in the XL mod for sure. Regardless of Tekbow and mine's opinion of the XL mod it is a great amp! The guys at Soldano are great to deal with and will help you out with your needs.

I have a lot of pedals thoug..
My delays sound fine in My xtc so they should be ok in this right..

this for sure

It's an awesome amp, i mean i'm making it sound like it sucked with the XL, it absolutely did not. it was still killer, just my ears prefer without, GSXs ears prefer with.

It should also be noted that i bought this second hand via ebay from a guy in the south of england and mike and bill have given me a level of support with this amp that a lot of companies i've bought new and direct from haven't.

is the XTC line level or um -10db? like i said, there's ways around it, and it seems to be a picky amp. some delays are fine, others aren't. i thinkit likes TC electronics stuff, trex and a few others. it's not so keen on vintage style delays i believe. it's not so much an issue because i don't use a lot of delay or reverb. maybe to give a little texture to a solo or something.

To be honest if you already have a XTC you dont need the Renegade, Legacy, or the Hot Rod + XL. The XTC has better tones than all of them...

The Soldano is more aggressive though, the XTC is a lot smoother and more refined. I think they would compliment each other well.

You might be right Pete as Im not an expert of the standard XTCs. But the last XTC I played was the 20th Anniversary and the Red Channel on that was angry as all hell. I think it was as mean as I remember my SLO and more so than I remember my HR 50+ XL.
