To be honest if you already have a XTC you dont need the Renegade, Legacy, or the Hot Rod + XL. The XTC has better tones than all of them...

The Soldano is more aggressive though, the XTC is a lot smoother and more refined. I think they would compliment each other well.

You might be right Pete as Im not an expert of the standard XTCs. But the last XTC I played was the 20th Anniversary and the Red Channel on that was angry as all hell. I think it was as mean as I remember my SLO and more so than I remember my HR 50+ XL.

I thought about running my SLO and XTC at the same time live - use the xtc for clean, plexi, and the chewy lead channel, SLO for dirty rhythms and facemelting solos ;) The SLO just has an aggressive graininess that the XTC lacked imho. XTC is more polite IMHO. I love my XTC, it's staying put... traded the SLO for a VHT UL which is even MORE aggressive. :)

Bring your favorate overdrive pedal with you for the 50.

Soldano has great tone.

I have an SLO. Nothing else really like it. It is a tone Icon. If you really really like that SLO tone but are looking at the amp trade as a way to get there..... It will get you kinda there but not really there. Guess it comes down to your $$$ situation and if you will be happy with it long term. It may be prudent to keep saving and sell what you have and buy a used SLO. I am assuming you have played an SLO and have that as a reference point. FWIW, nothing rolls off the volume and goes by pick attack into the edge of distortion and then into it deep like an SLO. Incredible amp for nuanced playing. Knopfler used them for a reason. Too bad SRV died before he could tour with the the ones made for him. The magic may be partly in the DeYoung tranny. The deal with the devil.... Something is there.

Nothing worse than buying the amp you almost love.....

lol don't worry, it has more than enough gain on tap, but this amp loves od's and distortions, interacts with them incredibly well.

great for different flavours and feels

i run the clean channel on the edge of breakup then hit it with the pedals you see in the sig, really likes fuzzes.

i would take at least a tubescreamer if you got one

If od pedals are your thing then ok but, not needed. It most definately has enough gain on tap. Don't be afraid, it's not a Plexi. Or, has more gain than a JCM 800/900, to use another comparison. Soldano's always have enough gain. Simply taste. On the the used market they go for $1000-$1200 for a HR50+XL. FYI :)
