I recently posted for suggestions on swapping out the pickups for my Charvel So Cal and ended up going with the Suhr Aldrich set and they absolutely rip. I had them professional installed and had the guitar set up at the same time. I had requested and was expecting to attain really low action and to have the floyd rose flush to the body or almost flush to the body. Unfortunately, the tech that installed the pickups and did the set up indicated that having the floyd rose flush to the body was not possible on this guitar even with the neck shims in place. The floyd actually sits up a little higher than the factory setup. I have owned a charvel evh art series and that guitar had the floyd rose flush on the body. Sorry for the long post but I am wondering if this is correct? If the neck pocket or neck heel is that much different on the So Cal as to not allow for the floyd to be flush to the body? Ultimately I am looking for the floyd to be dive only and low action, so is my only alternative to go with a product such as tremol no? Or are there other neck shims available that would make this possible? Any suggestions appreciated.

Thanks

The SoCal's are non recessed bridges. Theres no way to get them flush with the body. Install some sort of trem stopper.

I have a few charvel pro mods and each of them had the Floyd where it had a slight positive pull. I blocked the trem with the floydupgrades.com product that allows for dive only. Never tried to shim the neck to allow for a lower at trem setup.

Thanks for the replys, I just wanted to check to see if I was missing something. It makes sense that the floyd won't sit directly on the body but I was surprised at how high up off the body it sits and supposedly can't go much lower. I am just going to order a tremol no to deal with the floating trem, which I am not used to and not really digging.

The idea of shims to bring the bridge height down to the body seems backward. Is there a visible gap between the neck and the pocket when sighted down the neck from the headstock? If not, it could only shimmed toward the body, which would result in the bridge having to be raised. You may not end up having the bridge flush to the body, but it may be able to be closer than it currently is.

The neck pocket is really tight no gaps, it seemed counter-intuitive to me also but he said there were neck shims in it from the factory. I am pretty capable when it comes to changing strings and doing minor setups but I didn't want to mess with truss rod adjustments or pickup installation. Its a good setup and it sounds great I just thought the action could be a little lower with the floyd being lowered. I measured the string heights and everything is in spec. I am just comparing the setup on this charvel vs. the evh art series which didn't have a routed body either but the trem was very close to sitting right on the body. I assume I couldn't just lower the floyd via the posts without getting some buzzing up toward the nut? I am assuming the neck heel or the body route must be different given that EVH plays blocked dive only floyds and this guitar is meant to be fully floating? Again thanks for the replys and the input.

All the Pro-Mod Charvels came with non-recessed floating Floyds. All the Custom Shop Charvels (unless otherwise ordered by the customer) including the EVH and DeMartini guitars have non-recessed dive only, resting on the body Floyds. The only way to get a Pro-Mod to be dive only is to route some of the steep angle out of the neck pocket thus lowering the neck angle and allowing you to lower the Floyd to the body. Very simple job for a competent tech to do. I've done every one of the Pro-Mods I've owned over the years since their release because a non-recessed floating Floyd is horrible. Either it's non-recessed dive only or it's recessed and floating, any other option just seems wrong to me to me and is uncomfortable to play with a Floyd so far above the body.

it means level parallel to the body, not flush and has nothing to do with recessed or non recessed. The floyd base should be parallel to the surface of the guitar. Tune to pitch, adjust the trem claw to level. Might have to do it several times ans re-tune/re adjust.

on my socals, the trem floats. On my tele style 2, I have the trem flush with the body.

All the WDM guitar are the same a the SDs - you have pull up available on all. I've owned every one of them. I've also had 5 SD/SoCals, and they all had a little pull back too. Couldn't figure out why everyone was putting D-Tunas on them because of that...but hey - what do I know? :)
