Funny that you should mention that, GC has a bunch at really good prices and Im itchingto try them. Ive always heard good stuff about Egnater but have zero experience with them and know absolutely nothing about them..

That's a good suggestion, it's more of a classic rock amp to me but if you're going to boost it than it might do the trick and the cleans are pretty good.

Mesa TremOverb combo, great cleans awesome gain.
Might find one at the top of your price range if you look hard.

A decent Fender amp and the dirt box of your choice. Tons of great pedals for distortion into a clean amp.

The Egnator does have a really good clean channel which you can use some dirt boxes for a different distortion flavor beyond the dirt channel of that amp. I didn't quite jive with the dirt channel of the Renegade though. It's alright, just seemed to lack a certain character.

i am not a mesa guy, but i had a trem o verb combo when they first came out and it was a bad ass amp. i have seen them used for as cheap as 800 on san fran craigslist. i am sure if you looked in nyc you could prob find one around there. it was BY FAR the best mesa i have ever heard or played. it could get super heavy and had great cleans. hell, the tremelo even sounded good. maybe they are a bit cheaper here cause san fran is super close to petaluma, home of mesa.

I would look into a Blackstar HT60. You can probably get a real good deal on a used one. Or you can get the Blackstar HT100 and a 2x12 cab.

Here's my suggestion that will get skipped over, but I'll play anyway......not a 2-12 but a 1-12.....Traynor YCV50.
