High gain isn't the measure of a great amp.

I believe for some it is, subjective I agree. The measure of my Fender Twin was the clean tone, depends on the amp of course.

The much praised 6505 has high gain, but it's clean channel sucks, and can barely produce anything near "clean", and what clean tone it does have doesn't sound go good.

The 6505 doesn't have a clean channel, but I was able to dial in a pretty good passable clean tone on my 6505's rhythm channel. I'm sure some would have thought it sounded bad it was perfectly serviceable for a basic rock clean.

On the 6505+ I was able to dial in an even better clean due to the independent EQ and extra preamp tube dedicated to the rhythm channel.

If one is going with pedal, the best bet is to go for a lower wattage and lower priced Fender to get a good base tone, then juice it with pedals.

Definitely don't agree with that, but to each their own.

As far as Fender's go I prefer the high wattage models...

Tis true, very subjective.

I don't want to argue what a "clean" channel really is, but the 6505 may have one tone stack, but it has 2 variable gain pre's.
The 6505+ is multi channel with variable gain.
The 6505+ especially has a clean channel, or at least a channel that is not high gain.
The rhythm channel has a "crunch" button to engage something dirtier than what's intended without it, which would be a 'clean' tone.
My experience is with the 6505+, and the clean is nothing great. Yeah, sure, you can get a low gain tone, which we would call 'clean', but the tone isn't good. Yes, IMO. :)
My preferred clean tone is Egnater and Fender for brighter clean. The 6505+ couldn't do anything like that.

As for my 'pedal' comment, let's stay in context.
I was addressing the guys post question.
"IF" one is going with pedals, then get a good tone clean amp and juice it with pedals.
That would have an opposite that "IF" one doesn't want to use a pedal, and wants high gain, then of course the 6505/+ is a solid choice.

Nothing less expensive can be better than or equal to something more expensive.

It's just impossible.

You get the point.

Not true.

I once bought generic crackers that were MUCH better, tastier, and crisper than the higher cost bigger name brand crackers.
And the generic ones were like almost half the price.

So, at least in the world of flat, crispy, and salty bread, yes you can find better than equal to the more expensive version for a good bit less money.
And that tells me that this does exist in other products. :)

That's just something that generic cracker buyers say

I hear ya just get a recto and send it to Jerry at FJA for the mod treatment.

Done
Really was my gas killa......

Had a used Dual Recto.....shipped for the Mod to FJA....
less then $1500 and it kills damn near anything I have played! (cept the VH4) ;)
But you wanna talk 'bang for buck'?
the FJA recto is the Slayer.

Gotta agree with you man (except about the VH4....had 2 and didn;t care for either). My FJA modded Single Recto is an absolute beast. I like his work so much on it, I am pretty certain I am going to pick up a DSL 50 and have him mod it early next year. I like the idea of having his magic in a Recto and a DSL side by side

With that said, the amount of GREAT gear available today at very reasonable prices is staggering. Much more good stuff out there in the lower price range than when I started out.

I should have clarified my main approach with using pedals is for tone shaping/boosting, not necessarily in front of a clean amp (which I like that method as well in certain circumstances) but using a pedal to boost a medium and/or higher gain amp (with the amp gain dialed back a bit, or not   ) to add a certain feel under the pick and/or add the EQ characteristics of the pedal(s) to the base amp tone.

Some are anti-pedal and I understand that, sometimes I play straight in and don't care for them myself.

But...if you are willing to experiment you can enhance the base tone of commonly available cheap amps (or more expensive ones I've boosted boutiques as well   ) to achieve pseudo customized tones that *imo* rival anything out there.

Below is one of my favorite clips of a stock 2204 (except for effects loop) with some pedals in front. It's pretty close to the "tone in my head" with regards to that era. :)
