Cheap homemade E-bow?

I do not think it is that simple. watch out for demagnetization of your pickups well you are trying.

I don't know anything about the ebow, but my guess would be the magnetic field is cycled on and off rapidly. Repelling the string then allowing it to return to it's normal position and repelling it again many times a second. A magnet would just repel the string and wouldn't allow it to vibrate. Just a guess though.

That's how I understood the basic principle of the E-bow not to mention that there's also circuitry involved. definitely not as easy as just reversing a magnet
