I've been listening to a lot of Steelheart recently and i really dig Chris Risola's tone. I know its stereotypical 80's tone but thats what i like haha. Anyone have any info on what kinda of gear he used back in the day?

:checkthisout:

One of my alltime favorite bands. Matijevic is my favorite singer for sure. His approach and style is absolutely perfect to me. Their new Led Zep cover is killer too.

Dude just listened to the Black Dog cover, it is truly epic.

I saw them open for Lynch Mob (I think) in Columbus back when I was at OSU. It was a great show. I have no idea on his gear though.

Nice avatar quinnethan! I grew up in the burbs of Cincy.

I just watched a live vid of She's Gone and he had a strat with EMG's and some kind of Marshall.

Even though I feel queasy about 'stereotypical 80s tone' but I always feel compelled to listen to it.

I'm guessing that Chris Risola had some kind of effect processing, if you say his tone sounds 'stereotypical 80s'?

I have never heard of him or heard of Steelheart before.

He was using the channel switching JCM800 2210's. I have an old 80's mag with him in it where he was raving about those amps. Not sure if he boosted it or not because the article did not go into detail. Hope this helps.

I grew up in West Chester, graduated from Lakota in '90.

Was that Lynch Mob/Steelheart show at the Newport Music Hall? I used to go there all the time when I was in college at Ohio University in Athens.

Thanks Ralph saving the day again. I'm gonna start calling you "Clutch"

Cincy rocks my friend! Well I have lost all my hair due to years of anguish and turmoil the Bengals have put me through. :D

The first Steelheart really rocks IMO. Many haven't heard it but should give it a try.

I was in Milford but hit the Catholic school circuit. Also graduated in 1990.

Yes it was at the Newport! I have been to many shows at that place. After I graduated, they were customers of mine and I pretty much had an open ticket to any show I wanted to see. Good times.

My dad has had season tickets since the beginning. This year looks rough. Again. :aww:

I should check this out...

Digging up an old thread, as I just stumbled upon Steelheart yesterday, did you every pick up a Steelheart album?

I checked the reviews on allmusic and the 2nd album actually gets better reviews, but on Amazon its flipped.

I can shed some light on this, Chris was my teacher for about a year. Incidentally my brother took drum lessons from John Fowler, Steelheart's drummer. Chris is a tremendous force on the guitar, and a helluva nice guy too. He was definitely into super strats, but his guitar of choice was hands down the Ibanez RG. He had an endorsement deal with Ibanez, and he used them stock. Gainfreak is right, he used 2210's with matching cabinets, also stock. Cable into amp.

I grew up in Fairfield. You might know my old roomates brother Lance Brunen (Brians brother) or Bobby Bias. I lived in Fairfield Twp right up from Becketridge. I seen Steelheart with Lynchmob and at the Pavillion on the river.

Cool to know some of the "old" stuff is catching on. I saw Steelheart at the 7th street entry in Minneapolis back in the day. Can't remember the whole show, like who else was there, however I remember being impressed by the singing. WOW, he was amazing!

They were the opener, so they didn't play too long. Might have been right after the first album. We actually covered Everybody Loves Eileen back then.

Didn't get close enough to see the guitar rig, but what has been said sounds about right. Most of the 80's served up some sort of Marshall or ADA MP-1 tone with a decent amount of chorus as well. Of course there were some exceptions, yet 2210's would fit the bill.

Funny enough I was listening to some of there music last week... His Marshall inspired the Peavey VTM that Jose was working with I believe.
