Clean Boost or Overdrive?

What do you use to boost? I am really interested in a Koko boost. Looking to replace the BBE Green Screamer.

I use both with different results. What are you trying to achieve? For me, a clean boost just drives the front end a little harder, giving me more of my tone. A clean boost with eq will give you a volume boost and obviously boost/cut a certain frequency. (such as the Boss FB-2 boost sustainer), and an overdrive will change the tone and feel of the amp. Even the best, most transparent od pedal still changes the feel. Gets softer and usually thinner and makes gain tight and easy to play.

My fav of everything I've tried is a BB+.

All depends on what you are trying to achieve or want out of your tone. More of the same, more of the same with slight coloring, more grit and dirt with different tone, or louder and louder. Also need to consider what channel you want to use it on- clean, OD, lead, or all. For more of the same many prefer the one Inca showed for pure volume, front-end drive.

I love the Koko... Works great as a clean and mid boost but it is NOT an OD pedal.

As per Inca's suggestion, this pedal is the only clean boost you'll ever need. It's surreal it's so good.

As for overdrive? Personal preference ALL the way...I dig my BB Pre, OCD, couple others. But for clean boost? Man, hands down the above mentioned stomp :salute:

Well...to clarify I want something that will tighten up my amp...make it more raw and gritty...add some clarity and definition...so what do you think is the best solution for that sort of application? It will be on my lead channel. I run my gain around 6.5 on the 5150 II.

Maxon OD808 is hard to beat in this situation. Instead of more "raw and gritty" I'd say more "bite"

The 808 will definitely do the bottom right.

Another is the Green Rhino. The bottom and top are adjustable and it sounds very good.

Do you happen to know how the Green Rhino compares with the BB Preamp and the OCD? Those two are pretty different and I'm looking for a boost (mostly clean boosting) that falls in the middle I guess (can be both warmer/a little compressed ala the BB as well as brighter with more sizzle ala the OCD).

I have an OCD but I have no experience with BB. The OCD has a HP/LP filter switch, whereas the GR is adjustable. It's hard to describe difference between the OCD and GR. The OCD may be a bit stronger in the mids. The Rhino's ability to adjust the top and bottom is nice. Actually the GRhine -> OCD is a pretty nice combination

I have some OCD and Green Rhino clips (sig). Although not metal.

Ok, thanks for the info, I'll check into the clips! I'm leaning towards the GR right now but only if can be at least as snappy as the OCD (looking for a solid clean boost for the somewhat darker Budda SD 30ii). The OCD is a popular choice with that amp but I'd like something that can also do the traditional TS thing and use it with the Chupa (essentially a rodded 2203) as well. The BB is only "ok" with both. I guess one of the good things about buying a pedal at GC is if you don't like one you can sure as hell take it back and swap it.

I've used the maxon 808 fo years, but recently have been using my fulldrive2 instead. I realized between my jb, the mids dimed on my marshall and the maxon, I've been a little mid crazy....
The fulldrive has a flat mid switch that I like a lot, and I set the boost up a lot different from the way I used a ts boost. I'm getting a more balanced tone these days, and the fulltone seems thicker than the maxon....

If you want a straight clean boost, go with the Surreal More pedal, it is transparent and does just what you would want it to do.

The Koko boost is a great mid boost.

I personally love the Klon centaur for a clean boost though. It does color your tone just a little bit but in a good way and it gives it some bloom, feels great to play. I haven't played an amp it doesn't sound good through. Although the cost understandably deters people from it.

I think I will check out a Maxon and the Fulltone. The Koko boost is still in the mix too. Mids are a good thing haha. BTW I am moving to Columbia soon for a job. Relocating from Charleston. Still trying to figure out where I want to live.

I've had a number of boost an overdrive pedals including still owning a Ri TS808, Boss SD1, Fulldrive2 and the Koko boost.

If you're looking for a 'better' version of the sound you already have the Koko boost is the right choice. Once switched on you'll never want to turn it off again! of the others, the Fulldrive 2 is THE best for boost the distorted sound further as it has a dynic the others can't touch.

I've owned an OCD which I've since sold but wish I had bak again but purely for use as a low level drive.

If it adds anything to the mix, my amp does all the hardworking so I don't often use drives or boosts in my gigging rig but if I needed something for solos it would hands down be the Koko boost!
