So, Musician's Friend was doing a clearance on these MXL drum mics and they hit a price I decided I couldn't pass on ($23/mic). Got an A-5s and two A-5t mics and have been playing around with them for a few days. They're the tiniest little things I've ever seen as instrument mics, but the A-5t sounds pretty darned good.

This clip is a DSL through a Mesa widebody 1x12 ported cab with the two A-5ts. One's head-on right off the dustcap, the other is off the other side of the dustcap angled towards the outer edge of the speaker. I used a correlation meter to get them phase aligned, then ran the cables to this super cheap mixer to blend them before they hit the interface. For the price, I can't really argue with the job those little bastards are doing here.

What say ye?

hey that actually sounds pretty good. Aren't those mics dynamic ones so they pretty much operate like an SM-57?

Thanks, guys.

Thunkful, they're similar to a 57, but not exact. The A-5s is closest to the 57 in sound, though a bit raspier up top and a little less bottom end. The A-5t is supposed to have the same guts as the A-5s, but you'd never know it hearing them back to back. The A-5t allows a ton more bottom end, and doesn't have anywhere near as much harshness up top. It reminds me a lot of the way an Audix i5 sounds when mic'ing in similar positions. Flat frequency wise, and very open.

Both of them are tiny little things compared to a 57. They are meant to be drum mics, so they're supposed to stay out of the way on the kit, but the tom designated one sounds pretty good on guitar cabs. Especially when you consider how damn cheap they are.
