looking for a 1x12 (or perhaps 2x12) that has the ferocious gain attack of an amp head, but the compact size to keep in my bedroom when i don't feel like blowing up my basement with my thunderous metal riffage. trying to keep it under $1000, new or used. checking out peavey 5150, mesa mk3, and engl thunder. any others to recommend/eliminate right off the bat?

Those combos are still going to be blowing down the walls to your bedroom. Fair warning!

meh, i'm more concerned with the spacial/size issues than the volume

plus my room is well more soundproofed and deadened than my tile-floored, wood-paneled basement.

I had a Voodoo modded Peavey Ultra 212 that sounded awesome for high gain....you could try one of those and maybe get it modded...it sounds great without the mod also in case you dont want to ship back and forth..

Part of the punch from Amp heads and cabs even 212 cabs is that they have ported or closed back cabs. Look for a combo that has a closed back section.

Roland Cube Combo!! Best $200 i ever spent. Sounds good and is tiny! :D

What about the Rivera k-tre 1x12? I've tried the Engl thunder and preferred the screamer as I thought it had more gain and just sounded more aggressive so you might want to check that out as well. Also, those Line 6 DT amps are nice.

Mesa Tremoverb 2x12 ($800-$1200)
BlackStar stage 60 2x12 ($400-$550)
Marshall 602 60watt 2x12 (jcm2000) ($300-$600)
Marshall 401 40watt 1x12 (jcm2000) ($200-$500)
Marshall 4013 100watt 2x12 (jcm 800 the one every one wants) ($500-$1400)

I've owned all of those, and still own the first two.

I'd go with the TOV. FREAKIN AWESOME AMP!!!!!!!!!! It's a Dual Recto on the go!

Marshall DSL401 is a great sounding combo. Shoot yourself in the face before you buy a TSL.

Egnater Renegade 4 x 10 is also a great sounding amp, versatile, but heavy as heck.

Just got my Mesa DC-3 back up and running...the thing rips nicely!

Old Peavey Heritage 2x12. Some 130W output, i had a friend that rocked one. Seriously insanely loud. Ill never forget how loud that old 2x12 tube combo was.

I have never found a combo that sounds as good as a head/cab. They always sound boxy or honky to me. They usually weigh a ton too.
Buy yourself a 1x12 or a 2x12 and throw a head on top. A Mesa Mark head on a Thiele 1x12 is a tidy little package that will deliver the goods. And then you can use the same head with a 4x12 if you want to get really serious.
