Compressor / Limiter Pedals?

I'm looking for a combined compressor / limiter pedal.

There is a good demo of the Barber Tone Press here http://www.proguitarshop.com/product.php?ProductID=723

It sounded pretty good, and easy to use (which is good for me!). The Carl Martin Compressor/Limiter also looks and sounds good http://www.carlmartin.com/product_compressor.htm, as does the EBS MultiComp http://www.ebs.bass.se/ but its a compressor only.

I've also read/heard good things about the Aphex Punch Factory.

I'm looking for bass not guitar (I have a JangleBox on order for guitar) though. So if you, or your bass players, have a compressor / limiter (and/or exciter) pedal for bass, what is it? Any bass sound clips links appreciated too!

Honest to god, the best bass compressor that I've used so far is the BBE Opto Stomp. It's incredible.

The Barber Tone Press is also amazing, but more so for guitar, and for overall versatility. It CAN be used for bass, but it still sounds, at times, like you're using a compressor.

The BBE Opto STomp is super, super, super transparent. I love it for bass.

I am using a Barber tone Press on my bass rig. I think it works great. The blend knob is awesome and really lets you adjust it so its not messing with your attack. It really smooths things about for me.

I used to use an FMR audio RNC, but I find I like the tone press better and it works on guitar. The FMR audio RNLA is supposed to be better for bass.

If the tone press didn't work out, I was going to go with the EBS mulit-comp. What are you hoping to use the compressor for that you think you need a limiter? A limiter in my understanding is just a compressor set as a protection device to keep the signals below a certain threshold.

blackba, the limiter even things out for pop & slap style and I also have a tendency to get too aggressive with fast music (I play finger style). IMO Compressor/Limiter gives you both extremes for boosting/cutting to even out attack, sustain, etc.

I'm selling my ADA MB-1 which has a compressor, and I sold my Trace Elliot GP12SMX which also had compression. Neither had limiter so my pop and slap was often uneven. My Trace Elliot MP11 (keeper) preamp doesn't have a compressor or limiter either.

I'm leaning toward the Aphex or Carl Martin so far. Aphex is about $110 less than the CM, but the CM has more flexibility... need to hear clips or buy & try down the list!

I took a look at ebay and found the bass compressor I was looking for but didn't know it until I saw it, and didn't even know it existed (though no longer being made)!

I had a Trace Elliot GP12SMX preamp that had a compressor built in. I sold it to get my Trace Elliot MP11 preamp but it doesn't have the Trace Elliot compression. As I was looking on ebay, I discovered Trace Elliot made a pedal with the compressor from the SMX series pre-amp - exactly what I'm missing from the MP11. Of course, someone tried to swoop in at the last minute - they were too low and too late, so I got this for a good price IMO, $61. No power adapter, and the Trace Elliot 18v power adapter for their pedals goes for $50! I hear Radio Shack may have something that works for about $20, otherwise, this may not be such a bargain. There's another one of these for sale on ebay right now.

I wish more keyboard players would figure out how to use a compressor

Cool, do you know the model number so I can look it up.

I mainly find I have trouble with string balance, the A-string on about all the basses I have had is always a bit too loud and the E string is often tubby.

We had a guy try out for bass for my band last night. He used my ampeg rig and brought over a blue rick 4003 bass. It sounded awesome, very balanced. I just sat so well in the mix and really sounded bold. I got GAS again for a Rick bass for sure.

What do you mean by that? Are there certain patches that you think need more compression?

I mean I can't see a compressor being useful on an organ patch at all.
