I've never owned one but I'm looking to get one now. What are popular here? Just trying to get an idea about how it breaks down between by common pedals like MXR and Boss vs. the boutique stuff.

I think the best compressor available at any cost right niw is the Xotic SP.
It's reasonably priced and amazingly versatile.

The Xotic sounds really good, but it is a little too noisy for me. It is has a blend knob, which I feel is a must for and comp pedal. I personallyike the wampler ego compressor the best.

I don't find the SP noisy at all
I also have an old CS-2 ...now that is noisy !!!

Bogner Harlow Compressor ftw!

Other Bogner Neve Series pedals...
Bogner Burnley Distortion

Bogner Wessex

Into a Vox AC30... Classy!

Wampler and I recently got the Suhr Koji comp, like both way more than all the others I've had over the years.

I bought both the Xotic SP and the Wampler Ego cause I wanted to compare them directly.
Both of these compressors are very nice.
For some things I liked the Wampler and for other the Xotic.
In the end I went with the Xotic as I wanted the smaller footprint to try it.
The Wampler has a bit more control over the compression, and both have a 'blend', which IS a great thing to have.
It's a toss up on which one is better. I liked both, and I wouldn't say the Xotic is better than the Wampler nor vice versa.
I got a very sweet deal on the Xotic at $117. Also got a great deal on the Wampler at around $140.

I'm sure the others suggested here are also very good.
This forum's players tend to recommend very good gear.
The Xotic and Wampler were recommended to me by forum members and the suggestions were spot on. :)

I've owned the MXR and the Keeley.
Could never figure out what they were good for.
Took up a slot on the board and added noise.
Sustain? Eh, turn it up.
Even levels? Eh, practice your technique.

if you can check out xotic, wampler, empress, keeley, barber, and mxr

i've had a few dynacomps, menatone JAC, carl martin, tone press, and currently xotic sp and akai comp.
played empress at namm and loved it-really cool LED metering-

I've got the Wampler, it's my personal fav over the others I've tried (Keeley, MXR, Boss, Xotic). Never tried the tone press but I've heard it's great. Same w\the Suhr.

Lol. I tend to agree. I've never felt the need to use a compressor for any tones - from cleans to leads!

Well practice can substitute for much of the $$$ spent on this forum. :)

Love and use the SP Comp. Used to have an Ego which is also excellent.

What do you want it for?

I own the Rothwell and swear by it. I leave it on...

Comps are great pedals if you know how to use them and with the right tones. None of my mid to high gain sounds need it and rarely ever use it unless I need a long sustained note. But clean and semi dirty and especially if your a diverse player as tones go and switch from HB to SC pickups a lot which I do it's a must have. You don't need much and the Wampler and Suhr with the clean blend at 50% and output set to unity gain with the un-comped HB volume you can balance the volume from single coils and HB so switching between them yields all the different tones but at similar volume. The fact that it also lends a bit of sparkle to clean tones (especially SC tones) too is a bonus. For me a compressor is a major tone tool in my arsenal.
