Considering a 2-channel Dual Rectifier

I've been gasing for a Mesa Boogie for some time, and thought I might hold out to pick up one of the newer Roadsters, but found a 2-channel Dual Rectifier for sale here locally. I'm not sure how old it is, but I managed to get the serial number.

Any way to decipher its production date from that?

Anything else I should be aware of? Asking price is $999, but I'm fairly sure I can get it for less. Is this a good buy, I should I hold out for one of the newer heads?

That is a pretty good buy if the amp is in good condition. S/N 8xxx puts it to about mid to late 1996, just after the transition in 1995 from the fixed cord chassis. Being a Rectifier nut, I would def. buy that amp. Classic tones.

I had a 3 channel FJA-modded Recto and sold it to pick up my 2 Channel Dual Recto (link in my sig for clips) and regret nothing.

It comes with a footswitch as well.

Would the cleans be fairly decent on this particular model? Will it have any kind of lead boost, or is it a straight up one clean channel, one dirty channel, and that's it?

Sorry for so many questions, just not super familiar with the Boogie stuff.

There is no lead boost, just one dirty and one clean, but it does have channel cloning so you can set the clean channel to a dirty vintage gain and the second channel to a modern heavy tone and use a volume pedal on the first channel to clean things up.

The cleans on these amps are not Fender-clean, but very good. Slight amount of break up when set right. If you play with preamp tubes you can get cleaner. He is an example of the cleans:

 
Would you consider it a pretty versatile amp? I'm in a cover band, and we play quite a bit of classic rock, a decent amount of newer stuff, and every now and then we'll sprinkle in some country, so I don't want to drop a bunch of coin on a one trick pony. My current rig is an Egnater Renegade Head and Tourmaster 2x12 cab. It's handled everything great, I can't really complain one bit, it's just that persistent Boogie itch that I've been wanting to scratch. :rock:

Can you dial the power back on the older DR or is it strictly 100w?
 
I would consider it very versatile. I went from a 3 channel amp to a 2 channel one and have had no problems. You can pull 2 power tubes and make it 50 watts if you need too. It is a very loud amp.

If you didnt like it, you could always get your money back out of it! Hope that helps!
