Considering trading my EBMM JP for a Luke?

It seems to have everything I'm looking for. HSS, vintage trem, Alder but it's still an EBMM which I know I love.

I'm not feeling the JP's tone like I used to, and I'm longing for something single-coiley in the neck. I guess that's the Timmons fanboy in me, but I'm after something more akin to his neck tone; a bit fatter and warmer than your regular single. But then I suppose that's where the Luke both wins and loses - the EMGs. I know the singles sound great, but I've never loved EMG humbuckers. Everyone assures me they sound great in this guitar and I did enjoy the 85 in the bridge the most when I had EMG equipped guitars, but ya know...

Not a ton of cash to play with at the minute, so I would need to trade to something. Other considerations were a HSS Fender, or a Suhr or Anderson of some description?

I really liked the Luke I played, but it did have an odd neck shape. Play before you sell/trade for one IMO.

Yeah the neck is quite a V, but I liked the one I played briefly. The single coils make me happy too, but the EMG 85... Hmmm.

Alder/HSS/22 fret/Vintage trem definitely appeals to me.

I had a luke once. Great guitar, I liked the neck, but I didn't like the Pickups. You can't change them either, the body won't fit other types of pickups without routing.

I'd look into a Silo Special. I loved mine when I had it

Can't you just swap the 85 with something else?

I could, but as Marshall Freak said, the body needs routing.

Marshall Freak, what didn't you like about them?

I'm just not a big fan of EMG's, they sound sterile to me. If you like EMG's it's probably a great guitar for you.

I don't know, different neck width, fret height, and neck radius not to mention 2 less frets would be hard for me to adjust to. I also picked up a HSS guitar after years of H/H the middle pickup takes some getting used to.

I'm generally not. They're the thing holding me back I guess.

Adam, you wouldn`t have to do a thing if you swap the EMG 85 with a Seymour Duncan Blackout bucker.... ;)
And "everyone" claims they are more dynamic etc than EMGs. I have a Blackout in a cheapo guitar, and EMGs in my ESP, so a direct comparison is impossible, but the cheapo sounds excellent with the SD.

Adam,
I believe the SD Blackouts are cut to the same form-factor that EMGs are, mainly to appeal to the EMG crowd as an easy drop-in replacement. Worth a look ;)

edit: shit, KE got to it first before me....forgot to refresh the page before I posted! But yes, what he said...

Interesting. So I could keep the singles in there and switch the bridge for a Blackout if I didn't love the 85. Hmm...

dude, if I were you, I'd get a nice S/S/H strat! you could get an Eric Johnson, or a John Mayer (which sounds AMAZING) and swap the bridge s.c and get a nice fat single coil size bucker in there.

Possibly. I would absolutely love a Strat but the only thing is, out of every Strat I've played, I've never played one with a neck I've liked a great deal. I mean, they're OK, but none has ever blown me away. I know howver that EBMM necks are the shit. Maybe I need to go play a few more.

I also suspect Suhr and Anderson and Anderson necks to do something similar.

I do intend to pick up a Strat eventually though.

what type of necks do you like? baseball bats? V shapes? C shapes?

the John MAyer Strat has an AMAZING C shame neck......feels quite like my Explorer obviously the Strat scale is dif. but the size is AMAZING
