Converted Twin Jet from 34's to 88's

So sadly I had to do this through a tech, techs in Israel like to take allot of money on anything
more than scratching their butt, I paid 400$ including the tubes for this.

But I finally got the amp back and working with 150 watts of JJ KT88's.

And to my thoughts:

I like these better, I had JJ\Ruby 34's in this amp before and the difference is very permanent,
the attack is allot faster, the bass is tighter and te compression is more subtle, I do boost it
with a custom pedal built by piggy fx with the level on the booster dimed, gain below noon.

These tubes are allot more "articulate", the amp now responds allot more to my playing and playing fast
riffs sounds allot more clear and is easier to do now, the 34's were so heavy to handle on my fingers in retrospect.

I do understand why some people here might not like the 88's, but I think aside of the playability, the amp also sounds better now, not only for metal, I like the rock tones it produces, I think the biggest differences here are the CLARITY(the 34's are very muddy tubes in comparison), some subtle changes in the voicing(sounding a bit more aggressive overall) and the high end response which could be a bit piercing if you pick hard(the glassy highs everyone here were talking about).

Personally the amp suits me better now, I only got it back today and played it for a hour so the tubes might
open more on the next days, I do agree it could sound better without the "glassy highs", but I don't find it as bothering, I think these are allot more demanding tubes and they reflect your playing allot more - which I appreciate allot. I also think the voicing sounds more unique with them, it still sounds warm and crunchy imo, but it has this great clarity now with that nice bite and compression, I love that.

So, to everyone who's on the fence about TJ tubes swaps, I definitely recommend the 88's for my needs and taste, I like them better than the 34's, just wanted to give people here the other side of the coin.

Hope this helped.

Glad you got that all worked out! :) I am a fan of big bottles too!

Yeah, too bad we couldn't work it out with you since the tech wouldn't warranty his work when working
with tubes he doesn't know.

I again, very much appreciate the time and effort you've invested to give me the best service you could,
verifying anything I needed to know without trying to convince me buying.

Too bad there aren't people like this in here(Israel).. (-:

No worries. I know how that goes. Glad you are digging it!

I recently fixed my clipped TJ too. After playing mine with 88's after having 34's in there since I bought, it boggles my mind why it was popular for a short while to clip them and put 34's in. Mine sounded like crap because it had such a pronounced mid hump in the amp that it sounded boxy and couldn't be EQ'd out. I guess thats fine if you want to play classic rock or something....

After I put 88's in the amp it got punchy, tighter, and a much more balanced EQ. It's my new favorite amp at the moment. Heck, the 88's sound so good in the TJ, it is almost like it's made to run them or something....

Yep. I got sick of how compressed and muddy EL34s were in my Twin Jet. That thing was definitely made to run KT88s. I like them in my Rev 2 as well!

I guess it was popular around here with 34's because most of the guys here are into rock\grunge,
I can definitely understand why someone who's expecting a revision 2 kind of vibe would be disappointed,
but for what it's ment this amp is mad, I can't believe I wasted so much time with the 34's on it, i should have got it stock from bogner.

And "boxy" would be a very accurate description of how it sounds with 34's.
Compressed and muddy as well (-:

Yeah, for me the Rev 2 (especially with stock EL34s) is much more of a hard rock amp than the Twin Jet, which is more for metal. I might buy another quad of KT88s for my Rev 2 and keep it that way, since they suit my playing style better.

Yeah, I kinda came to realize that 34's aren't suited for metal playing that much, they have attack is too low and the bass is too boomy. I play so much better now, it's really a joy to play metal through this amp now, I didn't realize how much struggling I did before lol.

I don't really think it matters what tube is in the amp as much as what the amp is designed for. The Framus Cobra uses EL34's and it's probably the heaviest sounding amp in existence. But, Framus designed the EQ around the way a 34 sounds.

 KT88s rule! I've had them in Diezels, Bogners, and of course VHT pitbull ul's and they just crush - They are my favorite tube
