Oh crap! Here comes the EVH played a Vox thread again. True story: His real amp rig from the first album is shown in that pic. It's the Musicman head on the 2x15 cab. Quick, everyone run out and try and find that rig and you will nail EVH brown sound to a T!

I say that signature tone comes from that "doo-hicky" inside the WWII bombshell....

That's a Axe FX in the missile.

I can still remember seeing VH on their first tour and eyeballing that missile onstage. When he did the "Eruption" intro he would go over and fiddle with it and I thought that was the coolest of shit. I played "Runnin with the Devil" until my fingers bled.

And, I also remember we got a "two-fer" because they were opening for Black Sabbath and that particular day in Nashville must have been a bad one for Ozzie because he didn't show up and the remainder of the show was canceled and rescheduled the following night. So, I got two nights of VH and it was awesome.

Then, I found Eddie was tapping my GF, Valerie Bertinelli and it was on then......

[GP], What kind of equipment and effects do you use?

[EVH],........

Ah, I’ll tell ya, man, the stuff I used onstage today isn’t really my setup. See, we toured Japan, and on the way back over, all my good shit got ripped off. Got lost in air freight – by [shouts into microphone] Pan Am, ya fuckers! No, really. Some of it got lost – didn’t get put on the same plane, whatever. I used to have four very old Marshalls – like ’65 – and I had a guy named Jose, who’s in the San Fernando Valley somewhere, beef ’em up. He put bigger transformers in ’em. There’s a thing called bias in an amp, and you crank it all the way up and it really makes the tubes hot. I use these other things, which are called voltage generators – like a Variac? It’s a big box with a knob on it that controls voltage. Plug your amp into it, and it goes all the way from zero volts to like 140. The amp’s only supposed to take 100 volts, but you crank the thing above that like to 130, 140 volts, and the tubes really glow. So ya gotta keep a fan on ’em. Those amps used to blow like every other gig, and you have to retube them every other day, but they crank! They sound like nothing else to me, because they’re so overdriven. They usually don’t work for more than ten hours of playing – maybe even less, because usually every other gig they blow out. They drop like flies, you know.

Rumor has it that Eddie liked them golden arches to help with the brown sound.....

A reliable source told me, he had that bloke with the black t-shirt just to pour beer on the powerubes when overheating. That's what you hear at the end of eruption not a whammy dive.

I'm friends with a dude who saw Jose once, so I know what I'm talking about when it comes to EVH's gear. The true secret to Ed's tone (in addition to Musicman and Vox amps) was Randy's guitar:

That is a cool pic. Nice platforms. The only platforms I have seen better are the ones Ralph ( gainfreak) wears. :D

Cool Pic.

I can nail EVH tone with my Vox AC50 and my Fender MIM strat, except for the playing, sound, and phrasing. Other than that its dead on. :) :)
