Every now and again I poke about on youtube and see if there are any shows I may not have heard. This is one of many that we are lucky to have online after decades of having nothing but the pieced together Tribute disc. Check out Randy here, definitely an "On" night. One of the coolest live versions of Flying high Again I have heard. He is adding bits here or there and making the rythm sections dance. F_cking cool. Never get tired of listening to this guys bootlegs. Awesome live player and he is bringing the goods here. Anyway, no doubt many of you guys have already heard this but worth another listen if you haven't listened in a while. Also fairly good quality so not sure if this came in part from off the board but Randy's is super up front.

the live solo is very close to what is on Tribute in spots which goes to show how he had a lot of the main parts worked out. Still awesome in this one. Such strong pick attack. Love it.

Very cool. It's amazing there is almost no video of this guy. How can that be? The best vid out there is the one from the live set at the TV studio.

Because this happened before the "lets go to the concert with a smartphone" era

Listen to The Double Stop podcast with Chris Tsangarides.
Check out what he says Randy said to him in a car about the sound (production)of the 1st (I think) Ozzy record.
Interesting.

Randy actually had most of that solo worked out back in the Quiet Riot days before they were signed. There are bootleg vids of them at the Whiskey and hes doing it at that show. I dunno if I was more disappointed or surprised when I saw that.

In part yes but I think more likely due to the fact that Ozzy wasn't rolling in it at the time. It is funny that by the time they got to 1982, they obviously had made some money because there is a good quality full show featuring Brad Gillis and then a few festival dates in 83' with Jake E Lee that are fantastic. Then on out there is a ton of documented material. Who knows, maybe they planned to starting filming prior to his death not expecting him to die suddenly. All we have are a few grainy shows and the short after hours set and tons of bootleg audio.

I had forgotten about that. He also rehashed a lot of the rythm and lead break licks he used with Quiet Riot if I remember correctly. When you listen to Quiet Riot the Randy Years, he almost reused some stuff note for note. I liked it much better in the context of Ozzy though and glad it made the records. I think realistically as a player he would not have progressed to the stratosphere and his style might have become "dated" by today's standard, but I think there could have been another few killer albums in the Ozzy era if he hadn't passed. That said, then we would not of had Jake E Lee and man those two albums are full of some juicy playing and songs. Jake like Randy was huge on stage and knew how to move.

Plenty of footage of other 70's-80s bands out there though.

I just listened to this show yesterday, glad there are a lot of live shows with Randy on YouTube.

Actually according to Rudy Sarzo from his book "Off The Rails", Randy had already told Ozzy that the live Black Sabbath album was going to be his last. That we all know was Speak of the Devil with Gillis. Randy really didnt want to do a cover album and Ozzy's antics were really getting out of control and Randy had had enough.
It would have been interesting to see what he would have done after all the older material was used. That would have forced him to either find a singer/band that he could write with or go solo which really would have put a lot of pressure on him creatively. Shame we never got to see what could of been.

If I remember correctly he was gonna do the live album and one more studio album then split but it’s been 10 yrs since I’ve read that book

Forgot about all that too.. I also remember reading something about that. The Live album and then one more and see y'all later. Back to studying classical guitar and teaching I think was the plan. To be honest, I might also get sick of playing some of those Sabbath tunes and I don't think Randy was a huge fan of doing them either even though he breathed some new life into those tracks. Love his version of Children of the Grave. Sick outro solo.

Honestly, I am listening to some of Ozzy's live shows through to Zakk and hot diggity damn did he hit it big with going Randy - Jake - Zakk. They each had two monstrous albums. Jake probably has the coolest technical stuff of the three I would have to say though. Some of his runs and rythms are jaw dropping. Zakk gets shit on for the harmonics but NRFTW and No More Tears have some killer playing. You really only need 7 Ozzy albums: Blizzard,Diary, Tribute, BATM,Ultimate Sin, NRFTW and No More Tears. Boom, done. Everything else is filler.

Sounds like the exact audio lifted for the "Tribute" album.

Randy died in 82 video cam corders didnt come out till 83 or 84. At the time they were the size of a boom box, not easy to sneak in to a show.

When did Sharon decide they were going to switch from having the band do most of the writing to utilizing song writers more heavily? Any chance that was somewhere around No More Tears or not long after?

Right after Ozzmosis when Zakk left the band.

I think Randy without doubt would have evolved...he was a teacher at his core. How and where? Who knows but clearly he had a thirst for knowledge and wanted to push himself past Ozzy. Just 25, we only got a sample of what he was capable of IMO. Oddly I never felt Jake was all that technical compared to Randy. Great player though...still think his best work was the Bark album.
