The volume pot in my Charvel is a CTS, how do I know if it's a 250K or a 500K??

This is stamped on the back: 037407 0644 CTS

My guitar has a bridge humbucker and a neck single coil. No tone controls.

Thanks!

You can measure it. Do you have a DMM?

I do. But I'll admit that I'm no pro at using it!

chance are its a 500k due to the humbuckers.

Well...the reason I'm wondering is that many guys on Rig-Talk, have replaced the stock volume pot in their Charvel San Dimas guitars and had great success. I think they came stock with a 250k pot, but my Charvel was a custom run made for The Music Zoo. So I don't know if that qualifies it as a "custom shop" guitar that might possibly have upgraded electronics??

I suppose I could replace it with a 500k pot, since that's a inexpensive swap.

Well you'd have to set the DMM to measure OHM's then touch the 2 outside soldering tabs/posts on the pot. Turn the pot all the way up first. It should read around 500k or around 250k.

Not always the case. Every G&L I've bought with HBs has had 250k pots.

I think it is VERY imnportant to measure all volume pots. All pot resistance varies to some degree. I have had 500k pot meter between 400 and 600k. That is a 20-25% swing...and will cause a big difference in tone. I have said it before...I use 550k pots. I "scratch" the sides of the carbon tracks to make sure they are at 550k. This way I dont have to worry about the tone changing when I change to a new pot.

Hey Dave -

Where do you buy yours from? Is there a brand you prefer?

Thanks...

:)
