anybody ever deal with shamray custom guitars? Im looking for someone to build me an explorer based of a certain very expensive one. I would love to get an original but don't wanna wait 2 years and or pay 7 grand. But im a little iffy on getting a copy because I don't really wanna step on anybodys toes. if anything I just want the headstock, but I don't want people hatin on me for copying somebodys idea. Im talking about the mighty ken lawerence do you think he would give me permission to use his headstock for a build that I did for myself and myself only if I did it myself?

Have you played one?

I was obsessed with buying one few years ago, but could never justify it to myself. Would love to get my hands on one for a while to see if I thought it was worth it.

However, it would have to be spetacular in every aspect for me to buy one at this point. I fell in love with the Gutierrez stuff and can't imagine what would make the KL worth over double the cost.

my guess is that as long as you don't try to stick the ken lawrence name on it, you'll be fine. And you could probably very slightly change the headstock so it's still close enough. Don't quote me, though, i'm not a copyright lawyer.

^ ah good call there mark... ran are generally pretty good value, though i haven't tried one.

Played one with a $4800 price tag and it played like any other well made explorer.

What makes KL double the price?? Mc$$$$$$allica fanboys is the only reason I can come up with.

Whats the quality like on Rans? How long does it take for them to finish a guitar?

I've heard nothing but good things about RAN.

Also, I'm pretty sure you can get away with using the headstock as long as your not mass producing them. I've seen people make KL style explorers quite a lot.

Yes, that's why I mentioned them.

they ship worldwide, i think. problem is, being in the US you may get hit with customs charges...

It says on their site 8-10 months, that's the only drawback that i can see. That's why i went with legra myself.

The quality seems to be alright, but nothing mind blowing. I would personally never get one.

I have a thing against bolt ons. so no warmoth for me.

I got a quote from ran. about 2900 for a mahgany body, redwood top. transblack. mahagany neck, ebony fretboard, iron cross inlays. kl headstock. EMG's

If I can find good templates im pretty confident I can do it myself

It depends what how Poland deals with certain treaties.

I don't have a picture of the Explorer copy, but I've got a picture of a PRS copy he did on my Flickr account.

RRR does build explorers, LPs, single-cuts, etc, but I believe he stopped making the KL headstock. You can ask him yourself, he is rrrcustom on the ESP forum.
