Probably the best Dark high gain tone I've ever used is the EG3/4 module from Egnater. It is an amazing module. Either get the module, or get a Egnater IE-4 and use channels 3/4.

Eric

 It's a killer module. Never ice picky, but for me it still had a lot of clarity.

i dunno if i would call it dark but the Krank rev1 is a great head. and very moddable.

Krank Amps got pooped on in another forum because of some shenanigans that the company was pulling in terms of employees writing reviews of their products and not revealing that they worked for Krank. So out of the resulting outrage the products were bashed. Too bad because Krank Amps are actually really well made and sound killer. I really like the Revolution and it can get pretty dark.
Also, the one I played was really quiet. Probably wouldn't need a noise gate. And it was LOUD. As in piss off your whole neighborhood, zip code, and time zone loud.
Plus they are reasonably priced and made in the good ol US of A, baby!

yeah they were total fags about that having employees write stuff. the rev had the best clean i have personally used on a head. very liquid sounding. and agreed, very loud, very quiet. i still think $1600 is too steep for a rev though.

Depending on what you consider high gain, and what you use for pedals, I would add an Orange Rockerverb 50 to the list. Plenty of gain for a lot of music, add the right pedal and it can cover everything else as well.

I played at a jam night last night and the other guitarist was using a Krank 2x12 combo with a nice PRS guitar and he had a really nice dark/thick high gain sound happening.
Adding mids and reducing the presence and treble on many high gain amps works fine.
