The only "Good years" for greenbacks that I'm aware of are the pre-Rolas. Assuming your dates are correct, they're certainly assembled in England rather than China for what it's worth.

yes.. just checking I'm reading the serials correctly?

If my '93 quad has 6402 cones, what cones are on my my '89 quad (since theres nothing stamped on them)?

It's really amazing how many different sounds you can get out of the same rig, same playing, etc just from mic position and speakers..

Mics vary, speakers vary, mic placement/pointing varies a ton, etc..

I did a little experiment today where I recorded 4 speakers, 2 from each of my 4x12 cabs loaded with these quads. I recorded some riffs into a RC-2 looper pedal and fed it into the input of the amp.. Literally EVERYTHING held constant in the rig and even the playing and it's amazing how different each cab, speaker, mic placement, can change things.

I think people dont realize what a large factor the microphone choice, placement, and speaker choice make on the recorded sound..

Here's a date code chart from Uncle Spot: http://www.unclespot.com/celestion_date_codes.html

You still have to know what label is on the back and the way the Txxxx code appears to determine the era (65-73 pre rola greenback label, 73-75 rola celestion cream/gray/greenback, 76-80 blackback).

I did a Greenback ID thread back in 2005 on the TGP forum. You can see it here:

https://www.thegearpage.net/board/index. ... etc.67646/

Sadly, some of the pics are not still attached to that thread for some reason (archive goof, server failure, who knows), but most are. It's quite lengthy and involved, so get a pot of coffee going before you start reading.

Your 6402 cones are the best of the G12M RI cones from the 80/90's, the unmarked ones I can't comment on since I don't know what they are. Usually the date code has a T then 1221 after it. Many times the date code stamp is smeared and it winds up looking like a 7. Seems that may have happened in one of your date code stamps.

Past that it's just as you discovered...what you hear from supposedly identical quads isn't the same, the mic placement, etc all play a big part in what you hear out of the cab. The grillcloth also plays a part in the transparency of the speaker tone. The thicker salt & pepper (aka basketweave) cloth from the 60/70's has the most lows/low mids, while the checkerboard cloth is thinner and has more high end & upper mids. The black cloth is the thinnest and is considered the harshest of the cloths used.

Hope this helps, if not...email me.

Thanks! I think I came across that thread in my search but yea some pics are missing.

Regardless... I love my speakers. sound good to me. the 6402 quad does sound different. Sounds more open and less muffled to me

Side question...
I had my one quad open and I noticed what appeared to be some dark spots and/or burn marks in the speaker wire running to the speaker terminals (used see-through stereo zip cord). Few years ago I rewired the cab with thicker gauge wire (think i used 14 or 16 awg stranded stereo wire?) so I'm surprised to see some burn marks internal on some of the strands of wire. Is that normal? The other day the neighbor upstairs was pissing me off so I had my splawn quickrod CRANKED (but on 50W mode).. Could it have burned the wires internally?

Depends on how tough the insulation material is as to whether it burns or not from the heat in the speaker wires. That could lead to burn marks, singed insulation, etc.
