Death Scresm Bloody Gore : the first ?!

Love both bands but I always considered Possessed thrash. I don’t consider their landmark song Death Metal to be death metal as the guitar work is purely thrash. Vocals have that Tom Araya rasp, rather than the deep guttural style of Chuck.

I always thought of Venom as the proto-death metal band; now they sound more like early thrash to me

The guitar in Possessed is completely twisted compared to the first Death album. Death is really basic on the debut. Possessed had better leads on their debut also

This is exactly my take. I'm a big fan of possessed, but Chuck was the one who invented the prototypical death metal sound, or at least he was the first to put it on tape.

I guess if people want to get "technical" Necrophagia "Season of the dead" was out a few months before SBG and sounds even more "death metal"

IMO Venom is the root-band for thrash, death, and black metal.

I like SBG for the first complete death metal album.

I go back and forth with it. I lean toward it being the first. But it is in that same realm with possessed and venom to me.

I feel like Altars of madness really took it further because of Pete Sandoval.

The thrash picking and style started with Venom obviously. Yes I know they're sloppy. Venom created the underground

I agree but just being pure death metal I think death did it first . Like possed and venom and Motörhead all all have clack rock and classic metal vibes at times

Aside from the albums already discussed and regardless of what was actually the first, it is interesting to think of what was brewing in that time and what would eventually come out of all of it. Morbid Angel recorded several demos in 86 & 87, Necrovore in Texas with the Divus de Mortuus demo in March of 87, Slaughter up in Canada who had history with Chuck in 86 and released Strappado in April of 87...so much great stuff was to come out of all of this.
