I can't seem to dial in a good delay to use with distortion on my Strymon Timeline. All of the presets are made for clean tones. I can't seem to get the right decay and volume. I don't like a delay that makes my lead tone sound sloppy, and I don't want a delay that fades too quick to add depth. For my main delay, I just want a nice reverby kind of delay that's on the mild side but not too shy.

I might sell it for a BOSS DD-500, but I want to give it a chance first. Can you guys share some good delay settings that I can try out? Thanks in advance.

You may be trying to drive a thumbtack with a sledge hammer. Maybe a Carbon Copy or even a DD-7 might be more of what you are looking for. I've thought about getting a Timeline but in reality the only delay I really use is the type of delay you are looking for. Sorry I don't have any settings just my 2 cents :D

Digital Delay - 525ms, 4 repeats, level at 11 o'clock, high pass filter at 120hz, filter and grit at zero - put in your fx loop - I think that's my main ''go to'' solo delay, I can add more later, it's kinda an ''80's solo'' delay setting, plus you can still use the tap temp if you want, but I reckon it's good when the delay is not totally in sync with the music.

I love my Timeline, best delay around and I've tried a ton...

If you want a more simpler one, I personally would recommend the Vox Time Machine, it sounds killer.
I went for the Timeline cos it did not effect my tone at all and I need a lot of presets.

I think that the decay and the volume may not be the issue, try messing with any available EQ options and feedback filters instead. More treble roll-off on the repeats can make it sit better in the mix.

I recently got a Timeline and hate turning knobs. I haven't left the 1st Preset! I just dial the Volume and Feedback in, tap what tempo, and it sounds fine. Dial in Grit and whatever else to dirty the repeats up a bit.

Sometimes simple is better. Carbon Copy works well with higher gain playing and won't break the bank to test drive it.

Should be simple as everything necessary to dial in any sound you can buy is there. Lets start by you telling.us what your favorite delay is, then filtering repeats etc can be determined. I sold all of.my analog delay pedals as there is nothing.they do I.can't cop with my digital fx at this point.

get the tc flashback can do anything your leads will sound great

I like the tone of the Capistan and Timeline better than other delays. I like the DD-500 too probably as much, and despite being more comprehensive, it's actually easier to fiddle with. The problem I'm having is with distortion. FX are usually better through the loop, but my Reeves and a Marshall don't have an FX loop. Most of the time I play with distortion and just want a nice reverby delay just to add a little bit of depth, not so much trail off.

The reason I got the Timeline is because I want to use more cleanish and ambient effects to expand my music. However, the presets on the DD-500 are more usable than the presets on the Timeline. I'm thinking I'll probably just sell my Timeline and get a DD-500 as it seems to agree with me more. Still, first I'll try zz666's settings and whatever other recommended settings you guys might have for rock/metal soloing before I make that move.

Ahh can't help.you there, delay is rough before distortion.

I have a bunch of delays in all kinds of devices. I really really like some of the delays in my H9s, my G Major 2, my AX8, my MXR Carbon Copy and my Boss DD-7.... but once I started playing with an El Capistan, it was over.

Yeah, I've tried it with the delay after my overdrive and modulation pedals. Still not that great. Sounds best through an FX loop.

Well, bottom line, anything more than blues gain through amp input not so great. Through FX loop, great. Tried out a DD-500 through input and FX to compare, was better. Still think Strymon tape is the best sounding delay, but everything else on the DD-500 is as good. I'm gonna sell my Timeline and get one instead. Thanks for the help dudes.

Yes the dTape setting is my second favourite 'go to' delay.

I had the TC Flashback for a week, but to get delay trails you had to flick a switch inside which changed it to buffered bypass and it sucked tone.

Timeline is the only one I tried that didn't affect my tone through the loop.

I haven't noticed anything like that with the DD-500. I don't know what kind of bypass it uses, but I just assumed it was all buffered. I didn't have a whole lot of time comparing my Timeline and the DD-500, but I compared several presets and tweaks I commonly apply, and it seemed to keep up with the Timeline perfectly. Now that I realize it, the dTape is really what I like most about the Timeline. It sounds exactly like the Capistan, so I probably should have gone that route to begin with. However, there are some modulation kinds of things you can do with the DD-500 that the Timeline can't do. After comparing, I'm really liking the DD-500 a lot. In a previous thread, Rezamatix suggested a BOSS, so I'm glad I checked that one out.

I have the El Capistan & Carbon Copy. For lead delays, i've not found a better pedal than the CC.

I have a DD500, maybe we can work a trade? It's extremely clean, in the box, papers, etc.
