I entered a Devin Townsend cover song contest and decided to do the tune Suicide from Accelerated Evolution. I left some of the mistakes in tact since I am not a perfectionist (). I know that Devin's rhythm guitars aren't as gained out as mine but I did it to achieve a more "wet" tone. He uses tons of echos and reverbs and I don't have the outboard gear he does. I decided to clean boost (Maxon OD-9) the rhythm guitars to add some saturation to make up for the lack of space created by all of his echo and delay. No boosts were used for the leads other than my Dunlop Wah for the main solo.

Let me know if you want specifics on how I recorded it. It sounds best loud...so turn it up!

Anything I can do to improve the track before I submit? Thanks guys!

**Edit**

New Clip with adjusted track levels. Brought the rhythm guitars up a tad.

It sounds a bit distant to me. Bring the clip more up front, and I think it'll work very well.

Loved it! I take it you are tuned to Open C? I have one guitar set up for that and love how large that tuning can get with the right chord progressions.

Wow. I liked it so much that I had to register just to tell you how much I like it. IMO best metal tone posted in this board in the last few weeks. The only gripe I can find is some fret buzzing during the intro.

How do you achieve this "wall" of sound? And the stereo separation? I'm floored.

I agree, that's an incredible tone! That guitar track could pass for a professional recording.

Sounds like the tracks are doubled.

Damn! Your clips always sound killer!

My only issue, is that every once in a while, the rhythm guitars sound a little distant in the mix, leads sound fantastic. May just be my crap speakers though. Great job.

I could tell that, but whenever I try to double tracks, they don't come out as if they were "outside" the speakers. They sound much more centered even if I open them completely. In the poster's clip, well, you can hear the separation so clearly...

Are you panning both tracks further out to the left and right? Try panning them hard left and right and work your wayback in until you find that sweet spot.

The delay could have something to with the distant nature of the clip. It was fun!

Thanks Scott! It was tuned to Open C. It is a fun tuning to play around with. I need to get used to playing solos in this tuning (apparent from the clip)!

Thanks! The buzzing was my fault. You can't win them all.

Here is how I record my rhythm guitars:

- 1 rhythm track panned hard left and right (100% each way)
- Double track and pan left and right (77% each way)

Thanks! I think the delay added some depth in terms of distance.

fantastic tone! Meaty to say the least, nice job!

Thanks man!

Here's how I recorded this one:

Schecter Hellraiser (tuned to Open C) -> Maxon OD-9 -> ISP decimator -> Rocktron Xpression -> Mesa Mark IV -> Bogner Cab -> M-Audio Mobile Pre USB -> nTrack 5.

Recorded the rhythm tracks with lead channel with Gain and Drive set at 6.5. I boosted it with my Maxon and added some delay from the Xpression. Recorded bass direct with my SansAmp Bass Driver. Drums made with Drumagog and Steven Slate samples. Mic placement and amp settings pretty much same as in pics with exception of the drive and gain knobs.
