Good god, what a difference. Red channel is now: More punchy, articulate, less compressed/has more definition, more lively and has a tighter bass response with a gain knob that is now fully usable like the blue channel's and a more balanced bass response between those two channels. It sounds a lot like Alice in Chain's 'Facelift' to me..."We Die Young", "It Ain't Like That"

My drummer was blown away at how much improved that channel is now and I can tell it will sit better in a band mix. I like it as much as the blue channel now...I will say the cap for this mod was fuckin' huge...hehe...didn't take long to do for anyone who owns this amp...parts = 6 bucks shipped.

What type of cap ? Did you replace any old caps, or just add this ?

Cap: 1uF 250V poly [propylene] film capacitor
Resistor: 10k 1-watt carbon film resistor

I had to remove the post 2004 mod (resistor and cap) that was done to R12 on the board at the Bogner factory.

Thanks. Who's the cap manufacturer ? Different than stock ?

Any pics of the actual mod?

As done to an XTC Classic: "A 10K resistor in series with a 1uf or 1.5uf cap piggybacked over the resistor at R12 on the PCB. Gives more gain and a slight mid push. Known as the Cameron mod since he came up with it while working at Bogner"

Anyone have an XTC/played an XTC with the original red channel? I'm considering making it switchable.

Thanks for the info! Thinking of picking up a 101B again and doing this mod

Sure...it really made that channel come alive for me...it's a good deal less compressed and has none of that flub that the post 2004 mod had which were the two key areas I was looking to address. I can get some sick rhythm tones out of that channel now.

i'm glad i'm not the only one who bumps the iron into something you're not supposed to!

bumps!

if you look at those mods, you'll notice you each got into one of the green caps near the mod with the iron and melted the plastic. and maybe the red cap on yours?

i'm allways getting insulation on a wire, or burning the wood on a guitar cavity.

Yeah, it's tight working in there...mine is real clean, but took a lot of patience...i think a red cap might have been nicked, but it's just cosmetic. My soldering iron doesn't get real hot, so it takes a little more time and an extra steady hand.

Put it on a switch. That's what I'm going to do... Fortin Amps had a thread about doing that. Get a DPDT on/off/on switch, then you can go bogner/stock/cameron mod.

Yeah, I'm thinking of making the pre 2004 red channel switchable. I prefer to use the back of the amp amp and not the low input that was in the Fortin Amps thread, though.

So far , as far as i know i have a stock xtc 101b and couldnt be happier. Ive read up about what everyone is talking about and at least at this point cant understand it. IM A METAL HEAD( But of course like all kinds of music ;) ) and thought id be disappointed in my xtc. But i think its great and a huge difference from my tremoverb. I guess thats what i dont get. Being a metal head i couldnt get a good sound outtta that head. The XTC though? While not xtreme tones it still is increibly balls out. More bass more low end and not as flubby. Still gotta get a herbert though:D
