Hello everyone,

Just joined the forums though I have been reading and following posts on RigTalk for quite some time. I am new to TubeAmps but after watching many youtube videos and after trying a VH4 (kt77) at a local store I am in love with Diezel Amps. I am also amazed with what I hear about the Customer Service. All I can say is thank you Mr. Diezel for creating the best amps ever !!! So, anyhow, I am planning on buying a Diezel Amp for sure. I play mainly modern sounding thrash metal and what I hear is Herbert is best for metal. Unfortunately, my budget cannot handle Herbert at the moment I can find it second hand - which seems hard.

This brings me to my question: do you think it is a good idea to get an amp second hand? I have always been a bit scared to buy second hand as there can be faults or unexpected surprises. Here are my options: a VH4 second hand (I think a 2007-2008 model, el34s) or a much cheaper VH4 again second hand (2001 model, el34s) or a brand new D-Moll. Which one do you think I should go for? How does an older VH4 compare to a newer VH4 and is there such a huge difference? How does a D-Moll compare to VH4 or a Herbert? Sorry for all these questions but I am very interested in these amps and I definitely want to buy one and start recording my own songs with the amazing sound of Diezel

Hey man I have a Herbert and a vh4.
Herbert would match up better for thrash metal than the VH4.
Herbert's are a bit cheaper than VH4's second hand. I have a Herbert up for grabs so they aren't that hard to find.

Buying a second hand Diezel is perfectly fine, these things are built like tanks.
Buying here on rig talk is your best bet because you can trace the amp back and search users posts to see if there was ever any issues with it.

No word yet on the D-Moll man. Still waiting for a good recording of the amp so the jury is still out on them. As for buying a diezel second hand, do it up! Nothing at all to worry about besides doing a re-tube. There's tons of Herberts up for sale all the time. Same with the VH4's. There's alot of debate on the sound difference between the Herbert MK1 and MK2 versions.... Don't take anyones opinion. Only way to know is to try them both and make your own opinion (pretty tiny difference IMO. i like the MK1 better....) There is also some debate about the differences between the VH4, VH4s, and VH4 blue face and between the early ones and older ones. Here's the thing. THEY ALL SOUND AMAZING. seriously NO ONE will say that one sounds like garbage while the other one is "godly" they are all diezels. The differences are small. Put your mind at ease. Buy either a Herbert or VH4 and you will be happy.

Nailed it

To the OP, go for it - find EITHER a V or a Herbert used, re-tube it if need be, bias it right if need be, and test drive it in the context of your music. If you're into thrash, the Herbert will slay. But either the V or the Herb are incredible "introductions" to the world of Diezel. As for the D-Moll, again, this product hasn't been truly figured out yet, so it'd be hard to determine how it fits into your musical context.

Stick around here and you'll learn a lot about Diezels, and of course, you're right - the customer service is world class. The community of owners, pretty awesome bunch.

Cheers - welcome aboard.

I'm relatively new to the Diezel scene, but I went wild when I got my first one. I got a used Herbert and I love it. I got a Hagen very recently that I love for different reasons, they're just voiced differently.

I'll put it this way, I was a dyed in the wool Mesa guy prior to getting my Herbert. I 'only' own 3 Mesa amps anymore. I used to have a boatload of 'em.

Get a Herbert first. They seem to be more common on the used market. The second channel alone is worth the price of admission. Really.

Hey guys thank you so much for your informative answers. So Im guessing VH4 vs Herbert is the eternal question :) Btw how come there is no single video demonstrating and comparing the two amps next to each other channel by channel??

Josh Wibaut has some of the better demos out there for Diezels. Not back to back, but they should give you an idea. It's surprising that for how good Diezels sound live and on tape, most YouTube clips don't do them any justice. But Josh's are OK.

That is because most of them aren't recorded properly.

Here's one of each by the same user, not in English but the sound is insane!!!!!

For sure man!
OP, if you go Herbert or VH4 your good to go for sure! But please remember I have a Herbert for sale and mine comes with a free cab and is priced lower than others seen on Ebay :)

Thanks a lot guys for the video links they are quite nice and informing, and sound awesome. Im sure they sound so much better in person :) But, damn, it's sooo hard to decide whether if I should go for Herbert or VH4. Both are divine :) Maybe I'll end up flipping a coin :P

Hey Jonl, would like to consider your Herbert offer but I'm guessing you live in the States?? Coz I'm in Europe :O

Yes I am, that won't work when you try sticking it in the wall lol

Ok guys just another quick question: if I decide to go with Herbert for instance, would it be a good idea to connect it to a 120watts/8ohm 2x12 cab? Im gonna be moving soon from where I live and I'll be getting rid of the 2x12 and probably get a proper cabinet once I settle to the new place. But until then 2x12 it is. I just dont wanna destroy the cab or the Herbert for that matter due to improper voltage or something. I'll be playing at regular house levels nothing too loud or cranked up. What do you think?

All good if its 8 ohms in herbert and in the cab. just don't crank the master volume your speakers will most likely be destroy. but for home volume, no problem.

Heap your good to go, just keep the volume away from anything past 12 on master and channel
