I'm going to be purchasing one of these two amps within the next couple weeks and I'm torn as to which to buy.

This is what I'm looking for (in no particular order):

1) Good low volume playing
2) Great for recording! Hard Rock/Metal
3) Mixes great with a 2CH Triple Recto on recordings and live

Never played the Herbert, but the Uber (older model) our rhythm guitarist has sounds great at low volumes, and mixes really well with my 3-channel Dual Rectifier.

Had a Herbert and currently have an Uber.

Both are absolutely terrific for 1&2...Can`t comment on 3 with respect to the Herbert, but the Uber was great mixed with my friends Voodoo modded recto.

From a personal preference, I would take the Uber but that is just beause I felt the Herbert fell apart at volume (lost in the mix with the mids cranked). I have been hammered before for that statement so I won`t go into too much further detail, but to me the Herbert is the ultimate practice amp, but not much else. The Uber is one of my favorite amps that I have owned.

I currently own both and they are both amazing amps and both have their own flavor. I guess the best way I'd describe it is that the Uber has more of a raw sound to it where as the Herbert can sound a bit more compressed. Both amps work extremely well for me at practice volumes. I can't say about a Triple Rec, but I did own a Dual and the Bogner at the same time and they worked very well together. Aside from it's reputation as a high gain amp goes, one of the things that really turned me on about the Herbert was the boatload of capabilities it has over the Uber. Midi, series and parallel effects loop, two master volumes, etc. So that may also be something you might want to take into consideration when making your choice. Also for what it's worth, my Uber is an older version. Good luck, I'd say you won't be disappointed either way!

You're not the only one :bash:

Of all the clips I've heard I prefer the Herbert over the Uberschall.....I also owned a Herbert at one point and it was probably my all time favorite amps, tbh. I agree it doesn't do so well in a mix but, that is the least of my worries...I rarely play out. Also, I'm sure it can compete in a mix with a recto, especially with a front loaded v30 cab.

Wow, this many posts and no one's bashed the Uber? I don't know what to say   . To answer the questions, 1) Honestly you'd be hard pressed to find an amp that sounds better at low volume that these. I give a slight edge to the Uber only because I find it little more reactive and single notes sound bigger. 2) Either or really. I've heard more good recordings of the Herbert, but still prefer the "good" Uber recordings I've heard. 3) No idea.

I've had both and still have the Uber, so that tells you what side I'm on. They're really apples and oranges though. Do you like your metal raw and organic or polished and ready to go? That's kind of how view the differences between these two.

I love both, but I'd sell my uber before I'd sell my Herbert.

If you want more unique sound you'll probably favor the Herbert, otherwise Uberschall.

Keep in mind that Uberschall does just one thing, Herbert can do MANY things.

To those who thought Herbert got lost in the mix please post what guitar/pickups you were running with it & what settings you were using.

What your asking for both amps are fantastic for, Herbert has a FAR better master volume BUT I won't go 100% behind that as the only UBER I've played and played alot was a REV.1 and is probably better now(beastly head, I don't know why they changed it). I played on a very early rev1, it was actually my bandmates but he'd let me jam on it all the time because I kept it up for him and at the time I had a Triple Recto and the sound was GREAT together, although so was the Herbie but I played it with the Triple after it had been modified. Going on that though I'll say the UBER actually, it blended beautifully with the stock Recto, made it tolerable, haha.

Just to add, I have NEVER had a problem cutting through or being heard with a Herbert and I've jammed with alot of different dudes/amps, a few Marshalls are the only ones I may have considered a problem but not really, it still cuts but at a much lower frequency range, it blended but didn't get lost if that makes sense like the notes we're fully audible but deeper. They fit in the mix and when you need to blast over the band that's why there's a Master 2. If you've ever recorded with one you'd see what I mean, when dialed in nicley you really don't have to do much production, it's pretty much ready to go. I'm recording a cd right now and the only thing we did to it was compress the lower mids area to keep them in line.

My Turn... Godsmack,Richie Sambora, both use herbert live two diff types of music, but sound great live,no problems cutting, learn to eq,not only your head but other guitar and pa mix as well. on to the question...
Uber sounds rawer, yes right, but so does a rectifier.so my suggestion is dont have two amps voiced similar.I have a Herbert and a Mesa triple rec,Herbert is your more polished sound and mesa is the raw, great blend.Sounds amzing live and thick as hell recording, when I recorded them I run the gain at 12-1 only, mic the cabinet up twice(senn421&sm57),so you get 2 tracks from each head but only play twice. Then blend em,or add another head as we do as well and pan one left one right and one middle.I also use a splawn nitro,Diamond Nitrox and a Marshall dsl.Herbert sounds killer with all of them.Uber is a great amp but if you own a mesa n got raw already go for the polished tone.Plus herberts clean ch. is amazing, very sparkly(fenderish),and you have more options, flip the +/- switch and a world of diff,on - it gets raw,and you have the mid scoop, and deep controls and ch 3,plus a 2nd master. So lots of options.... Herbert = Winner

I think I'm leaning much more towards the Herbert but, there is a part of me that really wants to try a classic jcm800 as well......I know I'm fucking weird, NEVER played on an 800. I'm thinking an old 2204, cheap too :)

Nothing wrong with that dude.My 2204 Cameron is the most insane amp I've ever played.

still so up in the air :(

The only thing that is keeping me from hopping the the Herbert is the pricetag.

Thing about buying used is you usually never lose money :)

yea man, I'd be buying both used :) the difference in price between them is over $1,000. If the price was equal I'd pick the Herbert 10/10 probably.

How about picking up a VH4 & switching your Triple Rectifier with Uberschall? :D

Flip a coin, doesn't matter as he won't have it for long anyway
