Diezel VH4 St Anger Tone in a smaller package?

So I may be the only person alive who really likes the guitar tone on St Anger.

I've read that it's mostly a Diezel VH4. I want that sound, but I don't need fifteen channels and all the extra features on the VH4. I just want that one tone in a combo or smallbox head. I don't even need a clean channel. Is there anything out there that will get that tone in a smaller (preferably cheaper) package? Even if there is a pedal that nails it, I'd be open to that.

Inevitably I think someone will say Rectifier, but I hear a very distinct difference between the two, so I'm looking for other options.

Just get the new Zerrer preamp/pedal version and a good tube combo amp. Problem solved.

I like that St Anger tone a lot too. The drums and mix and everything else is horrid, but the guitars are clear and powerful.
I don't hear rectifier saturation & fizz at all in that tone. I'm not sure if anything else really nails that tone as it does reek of Diezel. Maybe the new VH2 would give you what you need, though not exactly smallbox. I think a lot of that signature Diezel tone comes from the power section, so I don't know if any smallbox head is going to get you there. Never tried the Zerrer though, that could be cool.

I believe he used some krankenstien' s on that album as well, and from what I remember of my old krank rev 1 212, it got pretty close with it its big tight low end and with lower fizz content than a recto. so with that in mind I imagine a Krank rev 1 junior should get pretty close. Thats as long as the cab used can put out enough low-end thump without farting out.

The new VH2 head that is coming out very soon or that VH4 pedal. I'd do an actual amp long before a pedal though.

Any more info on the VH2 head? Are there any pictures of it? I was at Musikmesse, but couldn't find anything Diezel

Oh I forgot about that Krank; you're right they probably had Krank Diezel and who knows what else tracking and molting together. I actually just talked to the guy who worked for Krank and verified shipping out lots of Kartnk amps during that recording session and you can see them in the Monster movie.

Still sounds predominantly Diezel-ish to me, but IDK

The Krankenstein wasn't introduced until late 2004/early 2005. He experimented with them 2005-2008, and were there for the Death Magnetic sessions

The VH4 is majority of the St. Anger tone. A Marshall JCM 2000 DSL 100 was there as well, although how much of it is in the final tone is unsure.

I just sold my VH-4, from 2005, and the amp sounded pretty much like the St Anger.
Another amp that I get very close to this tone is the early 2 chn rectos... channel 1, mode Vintage, gain around 12:00. Give it a good volume and i'll get you there.
By the way, I love the St Anger tone. Dark and scary!

A local metal radio station was taking request in which nobody was calling up. They then threatened to play the entire St Anger album! Needless to say they got plenty of requests afterwards.
