Difference Between Soldano Hot Rod 100 Plus and SLO-100?

I'm interested in hearing what the differences are. From what I can tell, the Hot Rod is a two channel SLO, with the normal channel being a mix of the clean and crunch channels of an SLO, and the overdrive channel is the same as an SLO overdrive channel.

Are there any other differences? If so, please tell me if they are bad/good differences. Thanks! :)

HR+ is darker. Besides that it's not quite as 3D sounding as SLO. Still a lot of amp for the money though.

HR+ normal channel is the clean channel of the SLO without the switchable crunch mode. The transformers in the SLO are different as well. Those are the biggest diffferences. They don't sound exactly alike, and the SLO has a bit of je ne sais quoi that nothing else has, but the topology is basically the same.

Hm. While the SLO-100 is their best amp, it's so goddamn expensive!

That's why I'm leaning towards a used Hot Rod 100 Plus. Can the normal channel of the Hot Rod go into a crunch sound at a low volume? (I assume you would do that by turning the master volume down and the preamp volume up)

You could, but it's also missing the bright switch which SLO has. Which makes it a bit less versatile.

What would you be using it for mainly? TBH I'm rather indifferent on the crunch sounds from both HR+ and SLO.

Most of the time you can find me playing stuff from bands like Incubus, Radiohead, Muse, RATM, etc

I already have a Vox AC30 that I will use for cleans, so I would wanna use the normal channel for a crunchy clean sound and the overdrive channel for a nice metal/rock sound. And then switching to the middle pickup for an indie rock style crunch sound and going to the normal channel for a clean sound with a teensy bit of dirt... does that sound like a job for a Soldano?

Had an HR 100 plus, really cool amp for 1K used. Solid, built in the USA and cuts like a knife. Have an SLO. As cool as the HR is the SLO really IS that much better. I've had a Wizard MTL, Mesa 2C+, and numerous modded Marshalls and as great as those amps are the SLO is at least equal to any of them in many categories. The loop is the only drawback, it doesn't play well with pedals. But, when I turn my SLO to 1.5-2 on the master it is incredible, and obvious to me why some of the world's greatest players have used one at one point or another. For 2.5 K used it's worth every penny.

2.5K is stretching it a little bit...

I suppose I can start with a Hod Rod 100 and then later on sell it and upgrade to an SLO-100. Also what cabinet do you guys recomment?

It can work like that, although I don't associate any of these bands with Soldano type of sound...

Any cab with Greenbacks or similar like 65s or even early 80s T75s. I had my old HR100 for a few years and it really is a great amp. Don't be afraid to throw a little boost in front!

Late '60s Marshall 4X12 with pre-Rola Greenbacks. Sounds killer with my SLO. Some prefer a 4X12 with all V30s. Not many like/recommend the Soldano cabs with Eminence speakers.

-if you've heard, played & fell in love with a/an SLO.<--------(note)-the-clever-a/an-so-that-the-right-&-wrong-way-to-use-SLO-(its a FUCKIN "Super-Lead-Overdrive")-DUDES!!.. WTF!!--------------<<<<<<<<

-don't know what youve got amp wise now, if it's serviceable, keep it & save your cake for the SLO.

-I always wondered why Mike didn't make different versions of the SLO-(keep the original SLO as is, well except for the shitty loop, and to this day still sucks)- instead, he made some ok, kinda cool, amps built off the typical Marshall platform, maybe a SLO II-(an up to date SLO with today's function's & options)-a SLO III-(MODERN VOICED SON OF SLO, still has dad's DNA, but voiced for tomorrow & beyond, with the flexibility of any tubes, power & pre-amp bias trim pots with enough range for any tube-

"BUILD IT!!!.. AND THEY WILL CUM!!!!"
