Anyone try this? Almost everybody I see who uses Areas runs the 58 in the neck and middle position, and runs a 61 in the bridge. I'm wondering how the higher output of the 61 would be in the neck, in an HSS guitar.

I just swapped an Area 58 for an Area 61 in the neck of my strat. The middle pickup is still a 58.

I'd say the 61 is definitely a little hotter and has a more woody tone...it's a little more compressed. I like it better for high gain soloing, but preferred the 58 for cleans. The 58 had more chime to it.

Yeah I liked the 58 in the neck better than the 61. That said, IMHO the Area's are the best noiseless singles out there.

That sounds like what I'm going for. I'm planning on using it more for higher gain leads, rather than clean tones. Basically, that in-your-face, woody, vowely SRV kinda tone.

In that case I think the 61 would be worth a try.

I have one guitar set up with these. But I've actually settled for a VV54 in the bridge vs. the 61' and VV58's in middle and neck. The 54, when rolling off the tone knob ( E.J. method) produces a fatter/creamier sound IMO.

Got them in the neck and middle of a USACG strat. It's a terrific pickup. Haven't tried the '58 yet.

I know but I figured I'd bump instead of starting a new one.

I just took an Area '67 out of the neck position of my strat. It was a good pickup but was lacking the chime that you get from a true Single Coil

FWIW, I just re-did an H-S-S guitar... put an Area '61 in the middle and an Injector Neck in the neck. AWESOME!!!! In the rest of my strats I have the VV '54 because I like that "woody" tone, but either combination is great--just depends on what you're going for.
