Just spoke to one of the small/boutique pickup makers (you know his pickups) and he mentioned that Dimarzio is suing one of the other boutique pickup makers for using/making "double creme" humbuckers. Apparently Dimarzio feels this is their Trademark and are going after other pickup makers.

Reminds me of Gibson...! :gethim:

Are they actually suing or just sending a cease and desist? They do have the legal trademark on double cremes though. It has always been weird to me that they were able to pull that.

From what I was told, this person has read tons of literature and legal mumbo jumbo, and says Dimarzio does NOT have a legal right to Double Creme.

...again, I'm just going by what this person shared with me.

As if I needed another reason to dislike Dimarzio pickups!

Haven't considered them for years due to this. I do wonder what will happen when what appears to be a poor excuse for a trademark gets put to the test (maybe it already has, I haven't kept up). I thought I read a recent comment from a small pickup maker that this was gonna get shaken up.

Fender has the trademark on frets, input jacks, and tuners. They should shut everyone down.

:)

So what company said the other company (who?) is getting sued by Dimarzio?

They aren't suing Wolf Tone but he is helping his competitors fight DiMarzio.

Good for him. Just a pathetic cash grab for DiMarzio.

I'd think if he didn't actually have a trademark Seymour Duncan would have done something years ago.

Geez, those pesky rights, copyrights, trademarks, laws, and ownership! How dare they impede my rights to steal their property!

;)

If DiMarzio owns it, they need to defend their rights against thieves. IMO

edit: FWIW, I dig DiMarzio (X2N is my fav passive humbucker) and EMG.

Even if I didn't like their products, stealing is stealing. So too bad, so sad for thieves.

Hearsay amounts to shit. Some brand loyalists love to rag on Dimzarzio, but they make great pickups. I could care less. Small pickup makers, amp builders, guitar luthiers, etc... steal designs from big companies all the time and some of them deserve to be sued. Who cares? Double cream has always been a Dimarzio thing and easy identifier of their pickups, so it's a moot point.

By "always been a DiMarzo thing", you mean 20 years after Gibson did plenty of double cream PAF humbuckers in the 50's?

they who copyright, trademark or patent a thing, own the thing...or at least the rights to the thing.

I called DiMarzio once...I wanted some recommendations for a passive Alnico magnet pickup. Instead I got a lecture about magnet worshippers and was blithely told my preferences are meaningless and I should just use a ceramic pickup of that persons choice. Never again.

At least I can call Seymour Duncan custom shop and get a real consultation, and get a custom pickup made (DiMarzio won't even do that).
I used to like them but since that bad experience, I don't care for them at all.

I ate at a restaurant many times, I dig the food, the owners, staff, etc., but once I got food poisoning. I still go there, and haven't been food poisoned since. ;)

DiMarzio AFAIK is not a custom pickup maker, and they publish their specs so you should be able to find something that meets your needs, otherwise, get a custom pickup. :)

Hating DiMarzio is no reason to condone stealing IMO. None of this matters if they own the rights to something, and are suing someone who used their property without licensing it or without permission. Stealing is stealing. Remember that next time your music you're trying to sell is pirated, just sayin'
