Hey dewds...

So I take all answers with a grain of salt because there are always "I'd buy it" responses when the wallet doesn't actually have to come out of the pocket, but I wanted to get a feel for your thoughts on this.

I'm considering building out a DIY Pedalboard. It would be a clamp free kit, meaning you wouldn't have to use wood clamps to hold it together for gluing because I'd design it with pocket screws for the corners which would be used both for joining strength and to pull it together during glue up.

The package would come with machined parts, un-sanded (mostly), screws, four feet and instructions. It's up to the customer whether they just leave it as-is, finish it, paint it, whatever. I need to figure out whether it's feasible to route a roundover on the edges before it's assembled and how much additional cost there, but don't see why not.

My goal would be to keep the price below $65 (plus shipping) for a 12"x24" board.

So, is something you think there's a large enough market for first of all, and second of all do you think I'm just asking for a bunch of support questions and wasted time by offering this?

Aaaaaaaaand go...

I voted pizza.

Last thing I'd want to spend any time on is assembling a pedalboard, so I voted pizza.

I was sooooooooo tempted to vote pizza, but decided to vote yes instead (I'm on a diet you know ;) ).

I'm probably not the best customer being here in the middle of nowhere and all, but yes, I would go for a kit easily!

I'd actually need a case for my FCB, would love to sport a Savage case for it :D.

I reached out to you recently about a build so I can tell you; this option would be very attractive. I'm more than confident a board built by you would be well worth the price but I am freaking cheap bastard   To spend some coin on something like a board that doesn't effect the tone and to me is merely for convenience; I can't justify it.

I had a buddy of mine make me one a while back. He based his design on the Trailer Trash Glow Top board.... Bent diamond plate sheet metal and used a plexi glass top. Looks killer! Get props on it all the time...

I voted pizza because as you describe it probably not but if you had options like risers to add to the top or different sizes so I could re-use my cases I might bite. I'm one of those in between guys, the packaged boards weren't customizable enough but I wasn't going to spring for a full on custom so I made my own. If your product would have allowed me to get where I am faster and easier I would have spent money on it. I'm very happy with it but it took enough time and effort that I wouldn't want to do it again. But I also don't want to spring for a full on custom. I would think there are more in the same situation.

I think it's a great idea, just about anyone can get a rattle can or head to home depot and get some stain/paint and screw something together. It's in the machining of the parts where most are going to fall flat. Plus it would be smaller to ship too. Are the assembled boards compatible with 3rd party cases or carry bags? If I was in the market for a board, this would be my deal maker/breaker. BTW, doesn't have to be a 'pedalboard!' bag, could also be a keyboard bag, etc. If you were able to provide info on where a bag or case that would fit your assembled boards could be found, that would probably help sell them.

Just my .02.

Thanks for the input. I don't have plans on building cases at this time since there are reasonably priced hard and soft cases available online. Never know for the future though.

A nice board is definitely a luxury. And yeah, you're pretty darned cheap. :D

Loads of options is something I'd have to stay away from in order to make them cost effective which probably rules out what would have gotten you to buy a kit.

This is the scenario that's made me wonder about selling kits and yep, would be able to ship it in a smaller box. I haven't found a source online yet for soft cases, although I'm certain they exist, but http://www.roadcasesusa.com sells cases that would fit my boards.

I voted pizza...

If I was going to build a pedal board, I would prefer the Trailer Trash type of platform simply because I am far better working with metal than I am wood. Just a personal preference...

If you could shave an inch off, this would fit nicely... or may already fit as the pedalboard they sell it with is 24x11.5.... you can fudge a little bit on a gig/carry bag.

Yeah, I've checked them out. 4" isn't enough headroom for a loaded board though.

I'm going to get the case thing figured out in time.

Phat bastards like me always hit pizza

I do need a larger board for all my junk......

How much for the gold top board?

Sent you a PM. The goldtop test board needs a couple more days sitting then I can hit it with a wet sand and polish, install the inputs and it's ready to go.

I say do both, have completely finished ones for those who pay others to DI and kits for those who have time on their hands to save them a buck or two.

5-6 years ago I would have said DIY, after getting burned out on building parts guitars I only want to do is plug in and play.

I'm definitely not thinking about doing this in place of finished boards. It would just be another option.
