Do I need a cap job?

My 92-93 Dual Rectifier is starting to make some weird noises... sounds like a static rustling sound through the speakers. Sometimes it is loud, sometimes it is hardly audible.

The amp is 20 years old... don't know if it has ever had a cap job. Is that the first place I should look?

tubes will cause that also. I would start with the pwr tubes.
Where you at in iowa?

I just put fresh tubes in it a month ago hoping it would solve the problem. I'm in Des Moines

Ok, could very well be caps then. I do not know of any good tube amp guys around here.

I was told by a tech that even decent capacitors should be replaced after 10 years.

what is it??? lol ^^ I bet Jerry can fix that beast for you and make it sound even better.

Hey, Any chance your getting cell phone calls when you hear this noise?

No, but the sound is similar to the noise that makes when it is near your pickups... the amp does it with nothing plugged into the input at all, though.

I just recorded a bit of it... of course when I want to record it, it doesn't do it very loud.

Gonna get it uploaded in a minute.

And Soundcloud is having server troubles.

The sound is like someone quietly rustling a newspaper most of the time, and sometimes gets loud enough to sound like static crackling.

Sounds like preamp tube(s) to me. Swap a few around and see if it changes.

I'd have to be pretty unlucky for it to be tube-related... I did a complete tube swap to try to fix it, and it didn't go away.

Sounds like preamp to me too. Preamp tubes can go bad at anytime, even if they're pretty new.

absolutely true

Well, nothing says I can't try swapping some around.

Any ideas which would be the most likely to cause this?

My Laney AOR 50 does this as well. I have changed every tube in it and it still does it. Sometimes is worse than others, but it can be annoying sometimes. I am curious myself of what the cause may be??

I bet Jerry knows and is Laughing and fixing one right now. :)

lol jk....Best of luck to you on this man I hate amp issues and I myself always seem to have them too. And if its not my amp acting up then my cord will short out just simply because eveything else is working.
