Ok, so I'm looking to get a really nice FX processor. I've had the G-Force and G-major but I want something really nice for another rack I'm building. I just need it for Delay and Chorus since I use pedals for everything else. I'm leaning towards the 2290 but the only thing that scares me is that T.C. doesn't repair or service them anymore. So if it breaks, I just throw it out? I cant seem to find anyone on the net that services them. I've played the 2290 before and it was great! Never the Eclipse though. So what do you guys think?

if you truly wish to be schooled in this subject, you HAVE to speak to this guy:

http://www.italodeangelis.com/it/eventide_and_other_stuff/eventide_H3000.asp

he developed the algorithms for the eventide stuff and is one of the preeminent experts in high end rack signal processors such as eventide, lexicon, and tc. he also offers custom guitar preset libraries for those devices on his website for a fee.

here are soundcloud samples of some of his presets:

http://soundcloud.com/italoop

and he's a really cool guy!

Oh very cool info Pat! Most of the presets on my 3000 are garbage and yes I am even refering to the hailed Vai ones.

Would rather just dump killer presets than break out the bible of eventide and a 5th of cheap scotch.

i thought i knew a bit about rack effects until i started conversing with this cat.....

he will go deeper into rack signal processing discussion than any i've met before. his h3000 controls the precipitation on alpha centari and dispenses caviar, dom, and cuban cigars on a diamond tea tray.

Well, it depends on what you need. I have two 2290's and they are sweet!

The 2290 is awesome for Delays, Chorus, Flange and has XLR and 1/4" in's and outs. So, if that's what you need, then you are golden with the 2290 alone. A plus for the 2290 is it has built-in loops for other pedals, so you can hook up your pedals to the 2290, leave them in your rack and then control the 2290 presets and your pedals via midi. You just leave the pedals on and the 2290 takes them in and out of the signal chain. I LOVE doing this, because when the loop for the pedal is not on, the pedal is out of the signal chain. It's a built-in true bypass.

I don't have any experience with the Eclipse personally, yet there are no bad reviews of Eventide stuff, it's basically awesome.

Good luck.

remember, the 2290 is almost impossible to fix if something goes wrong.

I have like an extra $550 in mine, and it's still not working right.

new chips, new caps, etc. and TC won't touch it.

Love the Eclipse, and the 4000 series Eventides.
The OD and Distortion effects will trump almost any pedal.
Plus the things are limitless in their abilities.
I love the 2290, but it is a bit limited.
I would go Eclipse without hesitating.

I have had both. The 2290 had the best audio quality and set up/programming/switching features. I found the Eclipse to be a little slow at switching presets, as in a second or two delay, which was not good onstage. Not sure if this is true with all of them. Both are packed with great stuff though. I got away from racks, so I am not too keen on another one. But, I would find a minty fresh upgraded 2290 before an Eclipse. Depends on the effects you need in it. For dual delays, stereo functions, chorus, flange, the 2290 was my favorite.

The 2290 for me is the best delay I have ever heard, that said the Strymon stuff is really good as well.

Wow, Thanks guys for all the info. I've heard some clips of the Eclipse and it sounded great but I noticed the switching was a little slow and that might be a problem. I also don't need all of those effects. I really just need a stereo delay so I guess the 2290 wins. Thanks to Brad and Steve for chiming in. You guys had everything as far as gear goes so I'll take your word's for it first. I already have the El Capistan and that pedal is amazing! It kind of got me into wanting another rack unit and the 2290 came to mind first. The only issue I have is if it breaks where do I get it repaired? Thanks again guys.

I've posted this before in reference to the switching on the Eventide stuff. There is a little trick to get the Eclipse, 4000 and 8000 series to instantly switch.
First you build the mother of all presets with every effect that you would ever use, you can even add 2 of each, IE 2x Delays, 2x Reverbs, 2x Chorus, 2x etc etc etc...
Now all you need to do is copy that preset and mute the effects that you don't want on your next preset you save.
By doing this the processor is already loaded with every effect and does not lag when muting the extra effects.
The Eventides only lag when the computer has to load all new effects into the signal chain.
Hope that helps someone.

And it also sounds like the 2290 is what you are looking for. It is an amazing unit all around.

im using axe ultra and its rockin ass! right now im using it as effects only and loving it, just another option

Yeah exactly...that's all I ever used it for, and it was insane.

With a side-platter of ambergris!

2290s sound great but there is no guarantee they can be repaired when they fail. I've serviced a lot of them, and a lot of times changing out the caps and cleaning things works. But sometimes it's the EPROMs or other chips and there is no source for them. So it's a big gamble investing that much in something that might not work next Tuesday.

The Eclipse is fantastic but does require some fiddling to keep the program changes fast. It's also very complicated to program (flip side of that is you have access to every parameter).

Do look into the AxeFX option. Very comparable sound quality but with fast changes and continued support.

A sleeper delay unit is the old Korg DL-8000R. Gets sound amazingly close to the 2290 but costs very little. Cons: rare, wall wart, not the easiest UI to figure out.

ah what do you know.....

just kidding my man-you crush and i agree 1000 percent

if i had to buy a big boy in this day and age it'd be an axe-fx.

(ps i just watched an old vid i had on a digital still camera of you playing with guthrie at tone merchants--audio is pretty doggone hammered/clipped but you ripped!)

bingo

i bought a pcm70 last month that got destroyed in shipping
no one here in LA wants to touch it.
zachman's pcm 80 is dead and same deal. no love.

at least i bought mine with a warranty and got a full refund.

stuff like this becomes more and more attractive for this reason:

pimp an ipad full of software from the big boys with apogee interfacing
i just updated my ampkit on my iphone and all i have is the free app but the sound has taken a quantum leap forward!
they even offer budda and fargen amps and rocktron is starting to add pedals:
http://agilepartners.com/apps/ampkit/

if rocktron dropped in an intellifex app, or tc would develop a flashback delay app for it, or strymon an el cap, lexicon pcm reverb, eventide pitch/modulation, fractal, etc, and someone did a wireless bluetooth footcontroller, i may be very close to wearing my live rig on a beltpack!

That very much could be the future, Pat...

can't wait for a carol ann, friedman, and cameron to show up on my iphone, with tc delay/chorus, lexicon verb, and eventide pitch

-basically sounds like an axe-fx app, which i predict would go through the roof, if they could do it before the market gets saturated.
would be awesome if they would collaborate with peavey/amplink kit deal as it is already successfully established as a portal to the iphone/ipad
