than the mighty metallica (during the 80s?)

I love them now btw, but they're not "METAL" anymore....they're hard rockish metal, which I totally dig too, so lets TRY and not make this a "THEY SUCK NOW" thread.

this is about METALLICA IN THE 80s.....

they were amazing!

Probably not. Priest, Maiden, Sabbath and Ozzy had some of their best years from 1980-1984. Then Metallica ruled the rest of the decade from then on. Megadeth hadn't peaked until 1990 with RIP. Anthrax had potential, never fullfiled it. Only Slayer from 86-88 could rival Metallica in terms of rabid fanbase, genre defining albums and musical intensity.

+1 Take one down. Pass it around.

Pretty sure that vieo was miked with an old camcorder. Not representative of their sound live.

Hammett sucked as much ass back then as he does now.

For heavy music back then I was into Maiden, Priest, Ozzy...but when I heard Master Of Puppets it was an experience. I was floored how heavy it sounded and I thought it was excellent writing to. Even members of Rush were Metallica fans when that album came out.

Haven't really liked a Metallica album since that.

I think Metallica Peaked and went down hill with their live shows after the AJFA tours..
They played epic 3 hour sets throwing in all of the good stuff..

After Black, Load, Their sets got shorter with more newer stuff thrown in and less older stuff, Plus they seemed to have lost that live intensity that they had previously.. :dunno:

Slayer peaked live at around Seasons in the abyss..
Anthrax Persistence of time
Megadeth Rust in peace

I think they all started sounded weak after that..

Iron Maiden ruled the 80s.....they peaked with Seventh Son IMO...round about the same time Metallica peaked.

Agree...still great today. Going to see them (and the rest of the big 4) in April

I wish i had all my stubs but here are a couple, best show on the planet
Look at the ticket price
Little blurry sorry.

Haha ah yeh the The Cult opening for Metallica, I remember Ian getting hit with a chair, with multiple chairs flying at the stage with people booing

I Would have never thought back then I would prefer to listen to The Cult these days

I'm one of the rare metalheads who can't stand Metallica. Any era.

The Cult were good, nobody boo'ed here, but Queensryche got the worst beating i've ever seen, live OR video,i mean flat out mean, people threw cans, shoes, you name it,it was thrown.Even though i wasn't into them i felt bad.BUT! i never would have wanted the opening slot for Metallica when they were at they're musical peak of anger. It was like Bon Jovi opening for Slayer.

Saw them both times too, They treated Queensryche the same way when I saw them but no one in the band actually got hit by a chair..

When 'Ride The Lightning' came out, it was the best I'd heard and ripped my eardrums into metal bliss... As there was NO competition at that time in that level of double kick drum, syncopated dualing chugga guitars, wickedly excellent vocals (thank goodness for no cookie monster crap back then)... Ya, Metallica's RTL did it for me. I thought MOP was a bit flimsy, not bad, but not as raw. And then I finished off with AJFA. I liked AJFA better than Master...just a bit.

Ozzy was a staple - period. I loved his shit. I was really blown away when RR passed away - to me that was a MAJOR avenue of metal talent cut short in its already short track :aww:

I was also listening to Helmet back then I think... I liked them a lot, maybe 1990 or so for them.

So it goes.

Metallica was just destroying live back in the day. That was just part of the story. They rocked hard, lived hard, and the mantra of anytime anywhere for a show was the epitome of metal.

motorhead , slayer, are in the ballpark, but early metallica was pretty badass
