All of my guitars have nickel frets and my fingers always seem to get blackened when playing for a while? Does this happen to anyone else?

This was after two hours of playing.

I use fast fret or the double sided pad cleaner, with some fret spray on it. I only get that with new stings, or oxidized stuff though. People's body chemistry affects strings like a mofo. I have friends that can look at strings and they start oxidizing. :dunno:

Before I started using Elixir strings I used to get black stuff on my fingertips. If using non-coated strings I get black spots on the unwound strings during 1st session and after few sessions the strings have turned dark.

Yes. But my picking hand. Not my fretting hand. They are Calloused and Dirty. Btw @psychodave you got great fingers for guitar. Looks like Paul Gilbert’s spider fingers.

I only get that sometimes and I haven’t really noticed why. TBH I always assumed it was the strings. Most of my guitars have nickel-silver frets and I’ve always used regular D’Addario.

Depending on the fret material and strings, yes. If they turn black, they also have a metal smell :dunno:

I don’t know, but I prefer andouille myself.

…. for a second there, I wasn’t sure if we were gonna get Rick rolled into a Metallica cover. 🙂

Only acoustic guitar make my finger a bit dark, if the strings are old.

Only callouses. That may be coming from your fretboard.

Not as much as that but yes. I think it's because of using old strings. Also because of playing on a gunky fretboard if you have super low action.

Not like that. The only times i've ended up with anything on my fretting hand is when I'm playing old strings (I think). I don't think I've ever equated it to fret wire material.

Oh no.... it's an attack of the Giant four finger Monster..............RUNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN!:p

Mine don't get that dirty but my fretboards do. Probably wear from the nickel frets and old strings. I run nickel strings as well and they do get oxidized over time. I know you like playing with old strings if you don't wipe them down right after playing each time I can see them oxidizing. When I wipe my strings down after playing I get a grayish/black residue on the cloth....that's probably what's on yer GIANT DIGITS......

Fingernail on the index finger of my picking hand does.

i get some blackening when playing a guitar with a streaked ebony board. Other ebony boards and rosewood haven’t led to blackened fingers
