So what's the story on these? I've heard they are good, particularly the old grey ones, but I've never played one. What does the 250 sound like compared to a tube screamer circuit?

I just got one yesterday. It sounds nothing like a tube screamer to me. Seems more like a generic distortion pedal.

Thanks for the input. "Generic distortion pedal" doesn't sound too interesting   .

They are a great boost for single coils into non-high gain amps. They aren't a distortion pedal...to use one as such would certainly be a disappointment.

The yellow 250 is my favorite boost when using single coils or P-90's.

It works well with low output buckets too......as long as your amp isn't too gainy.

One thing about the 250 is that you can't run it at the typical volume "maxed" and gain "low" setting or it will get loose/muddy. Use the both the volume and gain in moderation and they sound great.

It is nothing like a distortion pedal and actually produces less gain than your average tubescreamer....or variant.

Well maybe the one I have is fucked up. :dunno:

Edit: Revisited this OD when I got home and the above answers are correct(mine being the exception). It is great into a low gain amp, fattens things up nicely. For my use, high gain stuff, not a good fit.

I have the YJM version from DOD, which supposedly is the 250, I've used it as boost to my gain channels for an added level of oomph into my XXX, my Road King, my VH100R and my El Diablo. I play high gain too, what didnt' you like?

The YJM is the about the only OD pedal w/o EQ knobs that I can handle.
