Does the Herbert need Biasing when changing tubes?

Since your not really the blues or only clean type of guy and rather into rock and metal I would definitely recommend EL34.

I run 4 SED =C= El34s with 2 SED =C= 6L6s in my Herbert and it sounds fantastic. I had only used 6L6s in my amps before (mostly Mesa), but hearing the EL34s has converted me to start switching the 6L6s out in everything. I still like the bottom end of the 6L6s, which is why I'm keeping a pair in the Herbert, but the EL34s have such great punch and tone, they sound a lot more "alive" to me than the 6L6s. Running the one pair of 6L6s allows the EL34s to dominate the sound, but still get a little more low end grunt. If I had to only run one type of tube in the Herbert, it would be the EL34s, but seeing as though you can bias each pair seperately, it gives you the option of mixing it up a little.

Hey guys, this got me wondering if I can use both types of tube in my VH4? Or is that a feature exclusive to Herbert? I'm loving the SED 6L6s I'm using right now because they make the clean sound so much better, but I find myself missing the EL34s on channel 3. If I could compromise and have a pair of both that's something I'd defiinitely be interested in trying out! I like the SEDs because you can bias them a bit hotter without worrying about wearing out the tubes as much as some other brands, they're very reliable.

Unfortunately not. The VH4 has only one bias pot and according to Peter (if I remember correctly) a mod would be way to much work and way to expensive if it is doable.

Now that I think about it, if I was to change out the RUBY BSTR's in the VH4S, will I notice a substantial tone difference?

Those are the correct winged C's. I really liked the BSTR's too. Either one is fine.

There will be a little difference, yes. It is hard for me to really tell apart what effect the tubes and what effect the amp update itself had. But from what Peter told me the SED Tubes are by far the most reliable tubes he ever had and have a slightly different midrange. They are also supposed to have a tad more low end and a overall thicker sound which is warmer and a little less harsh. I hope I remembered correctly. Please correct me if I was wrong
