Sounds good. Loved the OG colossus back when Kyle shipped it around. Great amp. Something special in the mids. Need to pick another one up. Can’t believe that’s been 11-12 years ago now.

GREAT amp! There’s a decent amount Of post EQ on this, as the Rhodes voicing isn’t really in this vein, but I agree, the amp has a beautiful midrange. Reminds me of the good part of an SLO’s midrange mixed with a rectos. And the 4th channel with the mode switch engaged is one of my favorite lead tones ever, period.

This colossus was actually the very first one ever made, stoked to own it. Probably could have gotten much closer NOT boosting it like I did, but hey who cares. The high end on that record is tough to nail perfectly too. But it’s a fun tone none the less.

Really good job on the post eq, the high end especially is PERFECT, im gonna have to pick your brain about this

The Ares I used to have had one of the most unique mid range qualities of any amp I've owned. There was just this great aggressive texture to the mids and gain structure. Kyle makes killer amps I think!

Hate to nitpick (actually I love to nitpick) but it would be easier to nail the original if the same tuning was used. Still killer though

100 percent agreed! Was curious if anyone noticed that. I don’t have a guitar like this in standard tuning that would’ve been the most appropriate for this, so it had to do. For reference it was my 87 jackson custom shop SL2, with a….. well I don’t know what it is actually!…. In the bridge… Seymour Duncan is all I know. Probably a Jb If I had to guess though.

Also would’ve been closer with EMG’s of course too! But I was seeing how far I could take it with post EQ to make up for the lack of original gear literally AT ALL, so take it all for what it’s worth of course :)

Hey Dan… my “secret” lately has been to set the low pass fairly low: around 6-8k on a neve or SSL style eq/filter. Then to boost above that frequency range with a shelf. This is a fairly common practice I believe. I was using the 31102 console eq from noiseash for this, but mixed in the SSL E channel as well. Set the low pass on the 31102 at 8 or 10k, and then boosted at 12k or 10k on the high shelf of the eq.

Instead, I did the exact I did above with the 31102 with the low pass set at 8 or 10k, but actually boosted with a shelf below this frequency range wjth the SSL E channel strip at about 5.8 or 6k. I just liked the SSL’s shelf lower for this specifically, that’s all. But like on my morin clip, that’s exactly what I did: neve 31102 low pass at 8k, then a high shelf boost at 12 or 16k. Works real well for me anyways.

I am TOTALLY going to try this, right now.

Give it a shot! I’m oversimplifying this big time, but the Metallica tone needs a big cut around 1.2k, in fact that’s where they often cut with the aphex EQ in the loop on the black album etc. play with the Q bandwidth and the amount of cut etc, but 1.2k is the frequency roughly ;)

Also… everyone needs to go buy the titan audio IR’s that were just released… these are incredible I can tell already….

Here’s the same clip above using titans 1960Bv Profiles. Marshall UK celestion vintage, dated from the early 90s… this is a 57/421 mix, with no other changes to my signal path: the low end is incredible on these, but you get that super sub low end thing you get from Marshall cabs in spades with these. Same as the record AJFA as well.

*edit* yes… I know there is too much low end. But the highs and mids are what stand out here to me. It’s incredible to have this low end available though in IR form, that’s a first.

Oh I'm not actually concerned with duplicating the Metallica tone, I just wanted to know what you did to the high end specifically, because it has this 80s thrash thing you hear EVERYWHERE and I never knew that was how it was done.

So, I don't have a Neve style filter in my home setup, but I approximated the same sort of shelf effect with the high end with the scheps omni strip (6k lowpass and 8k shelf sounded best with the t75 cab im using) - but even without the right tools, holy crap, that really makes the high end come alive on high gain rhythm guitars. I was just fucking around with some riffs and did this in a couple hours (its rough) but the difference is noticeable in the high end, especially on heavier chuggier stuff around 55 seconds in.

That sounds great! The high end sounds more “professional” to me like this. It’s the only way I can get the high end I want, without the added noise and fizzy crap in the high end. Sounds really good dude, glad it’s a trick you can use! At my level, I’ve found no other way to really get the high end to be as bright and open as I want without the harsh crap up top, Atleast with what I want to hear personally.

Yea totally, I knew what you meant, this was just an added thought I meant to add in my ADD brain :D

I completely agree. And playing with the shelf frequencies you can taylor it to each source. I'm really glad I asked about this, because its something I've been grappling with for a long time, as far as high end without noise and fizz. Even with a basic kind of college try, it totally worked! Thanks Medic!
