That's easy. Grab a good guitar without a tremolo, fixed bridge.
Throw the heaviest strings it can handle on there, don't be a pussy here, go fatter than 60 gauge for your lowest string, now tune that bitch down as far as you can.

Find the loudest amp you can afford, preferably a sunn. Then. Hook up a delay, a couple of fuzz pedals and a detuner or octave pedal.

Put on a metronome at 66 bpm and play.

hehe. :) awesome. I have an Epiphone les paul goth with 12-56, that should do nicely for now. I use 11-50 in E so we're taling pretty heavy.

not sure my 5150 II will handle what a Sunn/Wizard can.

Fuzz pedals, crank the bass and gain, run your amp LOUD really get the thing cooking, use your neck pickup, mess with your tone knob for more doominess, and play slooow. That should get you started

That tone can be everything from a clean amp with fuzz pedals in front to an older marshall with a boost/od. It is really all in the feel and playing.

Tune to C standard, play through a Green Amp and Ampeg V4. Watch people's bowels uncontrollably release.

Talk to or check out the band Beast In The Field. That dude has the best tone of any stoner doom band I've ever seen, and is a real gear nerd.

Also, Emperor cabs was started by some doom heads that really can lead you in the right direction for speakers and cabs. Those things are built beautifully and sound killer.

If only I had the money to invest in a doom rig. I spend all my money and time on a more death/thrash setup, which is on the other end of the tonal spectrum.

Also, listen to more House of 13.

Don't forget to get high as fuck. Otherwise you may as well be in standard.

You've got to have a british voiced amp with lots of fuzzy warm gain dialed in, not the cold, tight sounding gain found in most other metal sub-genres. Don't be afraid to boost a dirty amp with a fuzz or distortion pedal. I think Candlemass has said that they used a DS-1 through a JCM 800 on one of their records. As far as amps go, Laney, Marshall or Orange should be the cats tits for this style. AFAIK Tony Iommi used a Laney amp for most of his career in Sabbath. Candlemass used JCM 800's. Matt Pike used Orange amps while he was in Sleep. Listen to Dopesmoker by Sleep and if you don't see your life's purpose then you aren't a doomhead. There is a legend that the members of Sleep bought an Orange amp with their record label funds, and spent the rest on pot. And then they wrote an hour long song.

And that's doom metal for you.

Haha.. very believable, thanks for the tips man, gonna listen now. :D

1. clean amp with a stupid high headroom
2. extra points if its a bass amp (sunn 2000s, ampeg V4, electrics, bassmans)
3. tune down to at least C
4. get the power tubes cooking with retarded amounts of volume
5. hit it with the nastyest fuzz (megalith) or fuzzstortion (bluebeard) pedal you can find
6. play slow, focus on the groove insted of the timing.

what sucks is im in the process of going from the death metal rig to a doom rig. at least my rev1 has a really nice full clean channel.

Are we talking about this:

or are we talking about something with cookie monster vocals?

I'm going to reiterate the GREEN AMP. You really need to play one of these things if you're into stoner/doom. Talk about GAS, and I don't even play doom.

No, that isn't anything close to doom metal. More like this.

Disregard the bad 80's choreography, just listen and browse the internet.

lots of good tips in this thread, but......

THE FUZZ PEDAL = the sound.

ANY loud, clean amp with big speakers will get you there, as long as you have something like:

1. Way Huge Swollen Pickle
2. Barber Trifecta
3. Stomp Under Foot Op Amp Muff

You will be happy to know that I just stumbled onto really really good doom tone from my rig. I thought my rig wouldn't be capable of it, but I found it today. I will make clips when I can, as well as explain in detail how the tone was achieved.

sunn amps old guitars

you can't just say Sunn amps without saying a distortion/fuzz pedal at the same time. Sunn amps are bass amps that caught on with the drone metal crowd. A straight Sunn amp won't give you doom tone.
