Just got the Oct issue of Guitar World Mag. Doug does the Betcha Can't Play This this month. His tone is unF'n believable. Would love to know what he was playing through.

Hey dude i saw that too

Im gonna bet that was the Vintage Modern with a boost OR a JVM. He's using those amps every chance he gets when he makes appearances or vids like that.

As crazy as it seems.. i have heard him use other amps and he still gets that same tone every time. He sounds the same thru everything, maybe not on recordings but in person i mean. Its insane and i envy him for it!! :D

Dan

My VM or JVM didn't sound nearly that badass but I ain't Doug either.

I know that Doug has this prototype boost pedal he's using on tour, and it could very well be a VM or JVM set crunchy and then boosted with the pedal. He hasnt really told anyone what the pedal is or when its gonna be available to the public!

Is that the pedal that's supposed to be like a Furman PQ3 in a pedal?

Something like that yeah! It probably boosts the same frequency he uses most, which on the Furman is around 800-1000hz medium bandwidth, and about 15-20db boost. A lot of 80's guys boosted around that frequency too, gives a great tone to lead solos

I've had a couple of PQ3's (and still have one) and I used them in the loop to help shape the tone of my DSL or SLX heads, not as a boost. I know, I'm weird. :)

Iv tried that too and it works well! Im 100% happy with the amp's tone though, so i just use it as a nice high gain front end boost  Works great for me, but requires a loop switcher and a noise gate if its gonna be used live!

furman PQ3!!

Bro if I could have gotten that tone with my VM and a PQ3 I'm gonna puke! I still think the VM was a pretty nice Marshall despite all the bad reviews we all read on the forums. I just couldn't seem to get it over the top with pedals.

The PQ-3 is a great tool, although i doubt it highly that Doug used a PQ-3 on that clip. His PQ-3 is in his rack wired into his switching system.

I do think the PQ-3 could help you get a tone close to that though.. To be honest if thats the tone you're after, id consider picking up a used Cameron HG Jose or Aldrich OR send a Marshall to Martin Golub at LAsounddesign. He works on Dougs amps and mods them too, so he could help you get that sound!

You know, what I have to say pertains nothing to the topic of this thread but it just hit me. 1 big reason I hate magazines... HOW THE F can they sell an october mag...i mean i understand the be ahead of the game thing..but jesus tapdancing christ... its still july...
Sorry, i had to get it out, it bugs the hell out of me...

i picked up some PQ3s (and a PQ6) recently for dirt cheap. sounds fantastic with my quick rod

If you got em for cheap then you really got lucky man... Iv seen them go as high as $300+ recently, which is rediculous. I scored mine 4 years ago for $100 :D

My PQ3 is just sitting there unused and has been for a few years. But the only way I'm selling it is if I was offered $300+ and even then I'd have to think about it. :)

Yeah exactly! I refuse to sell my PQ-3, because its ALWAYS useful for me.. no matter what im using it for! Its handy for so many different things!

Not to mention it sounds incredible :D

huge fan of the PQ3. jammed with a buddy of mine on friday and he thought it sounded great. my band loves it also

 Every guitarist who jams on my rig and tries the PQ-3, always walks away wanting to buy it :D

Its a great piece of gear! Im building a new live rig and I will be using the PQ3 for a lead boost and eq'ing for tunes where I need to drastically alter the sound.
Im lucky that I have a PQ3 and PQ4 and I bought them years ago when they were cheap!! I got each eq for $80! I lucked out bigtime!

If I was going to try to simulate the PQ3 lead boost with the parametric EQ that is in my Axe-FX, what settings would you recommend? What is the "Q" (width)? I assume I would be boosting between 800-1000 as mentioned previously?

Well i boost 3 bands on my PQ-3.. here's my settings!

100hz, bandwidth at noon, boosting 3db

800hz-1000hz (set to taste), bandwidth at 11 o clock, boosting 12-15db

2000hz, bandwidth at 1 o clock, boosting 3db

This is what i use infront of an already gainy amp to boost it for solos! I run Pq-3 --> noisegate--> amp input

The q width will make the sound either exaggerated or subtle. A narrow q or bandwidth makes the freequency selected very noticable/exaggerated and a wide bandwith makes the tone it bloom a bit more/ less exaggerated.

800 will give you that classic rockman mids and 1k will give you more of an open lynch type vibe. 2000 gives you killer presence.

I boost my similar to dans but a cut the bass instead of boosting
