Hi guys, I've been getting a lot of loud buzzing noise on both channels. I know Laura from Valve Queen emailed me a while back and said she thinks I likely have a shorted power tube and said the Ruby short bottle 6L6's are super and sound great. They are the same as the TAD (black plates). They are $80 per quad. Do you think I should get the preamp tubes first before the power tubes? I still have a barely used backup quad of JJ 6L6GC's I bought from Eurotubes some years ago. I play in a 5 piece classic rock/70's/80's hair metal band tuned to standard E with another guitarist. We were playing out almost every other weekend up until now for over 3-4 months. I think I'm going to buy the 6 x 12AX7 tone kit from Doug's Tubes for Mesa Tremoverb head.

I was wondering if I needed to select the Balanced Phase Inverter option for the additional $2?

I would try the JJs you already have just to see if Laura is right. Try to isolate the problem rather than throwing a bunch of tubes at it and hoping that fixes it.

this, plus don't spend the bucks for a "balanced" phase inverter tube. Many PI tubes only use one side of the tube (it is two tubes in one) and if it uses both sides, it won't make a difference unless everything else in the amp is "balanced" or equal...good luck with that!

Hi guys a warning if you are looking for tubes This is what happened with Doug's Tubes. He gets good reviews on this site but if you google the guy he gets slammed everywhere else. Unfortunaley I found out to late
I ordered a couple of overpriced cheap vacuum tubes for an amp. I found some other choices but failed to cancel order before they got to me. They arrived with several other boxes and I opened them.
A day or so later I requested a return, he asked what the problem was. I just found better cheaper . "well if the original shipping box is open I can't take them back"
"Any way if I did take them back there is 15% restocking fee"
So situation is:
1. No returns if His (shipping) box has been opened
2. 15% restocking if you meet item 1

Sounds like this guy has had some issues. The other mosts cites frequent bad tubes going out I guess he doesn't want to stand behind his products. I mean after all he will only accept a return if you Have Not inspected the merchandise.
This guy gets slammed every where, same sort of story all over. I you buy something great, if its broken when you get it you are on your own.

Me too. 10+ years. I know he can be pissy, but there's usually a reason and 2 sides to the story. I'd charge a re-stock too. If you found them cheaper, fine. Go there next time and keep the ones you bought from him. Lesson learned. Do your homework.

Seeing's how you joined here just to throw him under the bus, I'm inclined to believe you're not the sharpest knife in the drawer.

No one is attacking you. It comes off as pretty shallow joining the board just to bitch about trying to return tubes to a seller because you found them cheaper elsewhere. Tubes are tricky, and unless they are defective I think his policy is reasonable.

Sorry you had a bad experience. But I have to vouch for Doug too. I haven't ordered a lot from him but what I have ordered arrived no problems and he's always been patient and answered my questions when I have any. Im glad he's out there trying to keep tubes available for our amps. Doug's a good dude.

Not attacking you but if the box is opened, how would "he" know you didn't throw them in the amp and put time on them? Just food for thought.

Well first hooray for tubes, Yes I am new to tube world and yes thank goodness someone else is out there trying. I have run across at least 3 trully outstanding vendors. with the one klinker being Doug. He just happens to be the first person I found to replace a burned up tube I needed to replace. I believe my 1rst post mentions he gets good reviews on this site but my experience was very different. That is true. I also believe he's been burned somehow but "you you can't open the shipping box and return the merchendise" is not resonable. I could have bought this same Sovtek tube on Amazon and returned it with no questions asked. Part of marketing is accepting returns.. I had to open the shipping box to see what was in in it. for pete's sake. I had a lot of stuff incoming. Talk about nonsense.
I also dissagree about not being attacked, I believe "shallow" and "not the sharpest tack" along with assuming anybody but me knows why I joined the site. is a bit of an attack. I was researching tubes Mr Google said you guys were talking about them.

Sovtek 5ar4 , Doug charged about $30 and I found them for $19. the Sovtek was what came in the equipment I thought to replace with the same . I started shopping found cheaper but also better. I bought some NOS Tung Sol 5R4GY $34 each. So much better
But I'm not telling you where I got them Mr Smarty Pants Knife Drawer. I replaced the Tung Sols with a pair of NOS Mazda (Phillips) 5R4GYS $190 detail that NapalmBreath. Now I have a bead on some NOS 6922

Well I asked for return pretty quickly, a day or so, after they arrived. He claims to test the tubes before he ships so they have already been heated up once. At most I could have put a couple days on them. You know I'm sure lots of people buy lots of things from this nguy. He could seal the individual tube boxes with tape. What if you open box and get something you really need that is defective. Do you not see how that could happen? What if you buy three things you need and one is defective or wrong or missing in action. What if you just don't need one of the three after all? Keep two and eat one maybe at $30 but not at $200. His suggestion was to sell my tubes to somebody else.
So hypothetically he could seal individual tube boxes, tape, shrinkwrap, whatever and return anxiety just wouldn't be an issue. Food for thought.

This reminds me of the time a guy parked in my reserved space at the condo. I asked(told) him to move. He started calling me names, I called him names back. I'm not sure you'll fit in here. There's a site called The Gear Page that loves this kind of drama. Amazon, Walmart, Home Depot, yes all good places to look for fantastic tube return policies.
