Other than Ed's magic touch...
key ingredient?? Chorus/Flange?

I believe that is an Eventide harmonizer doing a detune, that gives that sound. Others have posted examples of it on here, but search youtube for van halen eventide and you will get some settings.

Low output humbucker and not too much gain. That song was recorded (as was Hot For Teacher and Girl Gone Bad) with Ed's '58 V with original PAFs still installed. Mid to high 7k ohm resistance.

Will a pitch shift provide a similar effect/tone.

Curious: Whammy vs. No-Whammy

Thanks Guys!

I say no, if I'm correct it's more of a detune in cents plus layers of other known magic.

I`m thinking the solo was recorded with a Floyd equipped guitar

Eventide 910 set at .99. Done.

That same tone is all over 1984.

Yep! THIS is the answer. I have two of the old H910s and THAT is the sound! I love those old machines for mild detune. They have a character that nothing else quite duplicates, but the next best thing is the H910 algorithm in the Pitch Factor pedal. It really needs to be done either W/D or W/D/W to get there as well. Mixing it in mono in with an effects loop or whatever is not at all the same.

The outro solo was the main r/w/b Charvel, but that was actually a different song spliced into DDL. All the main song is just the V single-tracked and split with the Eventide.

Everytime I see this rack I wish it was mine...

My Neunaber Chroma Chorus set for Detune does a pretty good job of getting the sound I reckon.

I don't own the 910..but monkeying around with (post-prod) Reaper...it has a couple cool effects with pitch shift that'll let you detune in cents.

either way...cool layer to add to the track.

thanks for the info guys.

I use a G System with -9 left and -10 right wdw and damn, does it ever sound close and awesome. Bit of reverb and delay to taste and instant Balance tone. One of my favorite albums tone wise and song wise.

I also have a Boss DC3 Digital Dimension that does it also very close. Great pedal.

I’d love to see some post a video of the right way to play this riff. There is something going on - either a bend, a slide - that creates the super cool vibe to the main riff.
