Anybody still play one of these? I'm trying to help our other guitarist replace his old Carvin Legacy. I want to keep it under $1k and it will be used for playing heavy southern rock and classic metal (similar to UFO, Thin Lizzy, etc). We are planning to keep his V30 loaded Legacy cab.

I actually had one briefly about 10 years ago, but I sent it directly for a Voodoo mod and I never cared for it after that. From what I can remember, I liked it better in stock form. But I just can't remember much about it. I'm just wondering if it can handle those tones. BTW, we have a pile of clean boosts/OD's......so not opposed to that. Honestly, I would prefer a 2203/2204 but the DSL's are going for almost half the price of an 800.

Also curious if anyone has played the new DSL's and if they are decent sounding/dependable?

The DSL can do those tones all day and they are ultra reliable. The DSL (old ones) is still very widely used as touring gear by loads of bands. I've just recently seen Vinnie Moore rocking them for UFO and his tone was amazing.

I use the 2 channel JVM and IMO it's a superior amp but I'm not sure if they're in your price range?

I had a dsl100h (the new one) earlier this year. I dunno - the tone was ok - just didn't seem very versatile and seemed to be made from cheaper parts and materials than the original/english made marshalls. I took it back and bought a used jvm410h. Am very happeh : )

I had a DSL for about 6 months. I played a couple of gigs with it and used it in practice a couple of times. Good amp, but my biggest complaint was the disparity in bass between the gain and clean channels. I also had a hard time finding the right amount of compression between the gain modes. It'll do Thin Lizzy and UFO no problem. The best tones i found were on the clean channel with the gain button in and the gain turned up and boosted. Kills the point of having a two channel amp though.

I had one for a while. It was a decent amp, but sounded kind of sterile.

I found one locally for $500. I think I'm just gonna snag it and find out.

What doesn't he like about the Legacy?

It's a pretty old amp and could probably benefit from a retube/bias. However, it is just too dark/murky in a band mix. We stuck an EQ in the loop and that helped a lot ......but not enough. It just doesn't have the right sound for what we are doing. I don't know if there are any mods that can remedy this???

i have a new DSL 100/50 and i love it.

can do 70s/80s rock easily.recommended!!

I have DSL 100(older) and I LOVE mine!! Very underrated amp. Channel 2 without ultra gain engaged gain at about 1:30 and then boosted sounds mighty fine.

If i were you and your looking for something extremely versitile grab a JCM 200 TSL .. I just picked one up for $700 and it has rocked my world.. with the DSL you have the shared eq and pseudo-two channel operation.. with the TSL you can get all of that classic rock and all the modern rock and metal you want! and if you jump the loop you have a footswitchable boost that required no pedals and your tone is much purer than any boost pedal can get ya... I just spent a couple hours yesterday with one of my fellow guitar geek buddies and we've got the TSL spewing killer fat singing cleans, Classic rock of any flavor but we eventually tuned it for a near AFD tone on the crunch channel, and screaming "master of puppets crossed with machinehead" heavy metal with an added blast of gain, volume and tightness with the boost all on the Lead Channel!
I would highly recommend this amp and just ignore the DSL and 800 trolls out there!

I don't need versatility. We only do one thing. Plus, I had a TSL 2x12 once and could not dial in anything useable for any style of music. That's just me though.

If you coudnt dial it in its proably part shared eq on the gain channels and lack of time spent working with it.. Ive had mine for less than a week and mine is the 100W head and I could get it dialed in pretty well but it took me and one of my guitar geek buddies to alternate playing and tweaking for a couple hours and after that its been the greatest amp ive ever used! Although you are using it for classic stuff i can understand wanting something simpler but the TSL can take on a DSL any day of the week on that style of tone and the TSL can keep right up with the DSL plus youve got an actual "Independant" EQ for each channel, no sharing the same EQ with you clean and dirty channels and the VPR is great for getting high volume amp tones without blowing out the windows of your house... I know im gonna catch flack for this but I by far perfer the TSL in ever musical genre, Ive played plenty of DSL's and even the 60 watt TSL combos and heads but the TSL 100 stands above them all, And people who are hating on them are simply not spending the proper time with them, Ive gotten good ole southern rock to 80's metal on the crunch channel all the way to tight thrash and new metal (not downtuned sludge), not the garbage played mostly on the radio on the lead channel and then ive got the loop jumpered for yet another level of lead tone.

Really good amps, the green channel crunch was great. Just a case of putting decent tubes in and you have an amp that can rival some expensive counterparts in my opinion. By the way, there is a simple mod if I remember right that smooths out the red channel and gives it a nicer tone. I think it just involved snipping a resistor or cap on the board.

dsl and great amps for the money ..808 on the green channel is pretty killer

I would take a DSL over a TSL all day long. To each his own though

DSL propaganda is the main reason that they are not more popular, because when somebody a posts a question about getting a new amp ever damn response is DSL DSL DSL (at least on the marshall forum) and there is a general dislike from A: people who have never played them and are just jumping on the bandwagon B: People who have played them but have not taken the time to dial them as they are bit more complex with all those scary independent EQ's and tone shaping options It takes C: People who have tried both and just dont wanna go through the tweaking process
I have reached my Grail Tone and if something happened to my TSL i would buy another without thought!

I agree whole heartedly that each his own but id really like to see some advice that is not just pumping people with the idea that the DSL is the only way to go, id love to hear from some fellow TSL users as i know your out there.
