Hey guys, check it out. This is a modified Mesa Boogie Studio preamp, using ONLY the onboard graphic EQ into the FX loop of my rackmount Rectifier.

Now, I've used other EQs with my recto before, in all variations, but something about a real Mesa Boogie EQ with it is just spot ONNNN  It's just as versatile and powerful as on the Mark series and provides a LOT of tone shaping. It's an even more big and huge sound (not to mention feel) but very tight all around. I definitely want to try it out with a Triaxis at some point :)

I agree ... What makes that GEQ different than most is complete saturation. It is because of way over-sized capacitors.

I found three shapes I very much like with the GEQ ....

The typical V. The typical V with both 750 & 2200 down.

The last works great for leads / I really like it with the ORANGE channel on a DR or any amp actually.

80 - near middle
240 / 750 / 6600 all bumped up.
Now slide the 2200 thru its entire range to get a lot of great lead tones.

If you or anyone else try's these shapes let me know what you think.... :)

I do not loop out the EQ .... but have used the effects send of many amps into the effects return of the Mark amps. I have used the preamp of my Tremoverb with the poweramp & GEQ of my Mark IV many times.

Sounds awesome. Mesa should make a pedal version of that EQ.

+1

I was thinking exact the same thing. The Frequency range of this EQ is slightly different than other EQ´s like the MXR 6-Band EQ
for example.

I would directly buy this Mesa EQ

i've long thought the same....a pedal version of that eq, done RIGHT too....exactly to those specs with minimal amp/pedal transitions. would be a HUGE seller for them.

Mesa cannot make the eq, without an external power supply... I read somewhere it needs somewhere like, 40VDC to operate. I think.

Thanks guys, I like it a lot and it's working well.

Yup, Mesa can and has made them, unofficially of course, total mains powered no Stompboxes.

So a rackmount version might be a option .... a rack with several that are switchable would be very cool.

So how do you hook that up with Studio Pre. By modified, do you mean modified to use just the EQ with patch points?

Yes, ONLY the graphic EQ is active. The only other function that works with this mod is the eq off/on switch =)

I'm plugged into my dual rectos input. The eq is in the loop just like you would use any other effect.

I'll have to look into that one day. I have a studio pre and dig the sound of my MXR 10 band in the loop of my stiletto. Would be curious to hear the 5 band GEQ in there. I also have a Badcat Cougar 50 that I bet an EQ in the loop would be killer with.

Yes, that's like what they built for James Hetfield except its not switchable it's just 2 EQs in one unit. A few other people have an actual custom eq from them too. But if you had two, you could easily switch between them.
