dudes,THD Hot Plate or similar attenuator w/ VH4? yes or no?

Hey dudes
happy christmas first of all to everyone at rig-talk :rock:
I'm recording with my band in Jan/feb [check us out, myspace.com/superfoxuk] I hope you enjoy.
Anyway , I was thinking about buying a power reducer to record my VH4 and Herbert with, so I can drive it much more in the studio so it sounds much bigger at lower volumes. Would this be a success with the Diezels? Has anyone had any good experiences/bad experiences with the THD Hot Plate? Or are the Groove Tubes [GTEL84S tubes] any better? Or are neither a good idea?

Definitely not :thumbsdown: . The tone of the VH4 will be destroyed. Instead, look at an isolation cab from Randall or Rivera. Or, make one. You can Google up some plans.

I use a Hot Plate with my Sig - X and other heads all the time. After I let Glory Hog use mine he bought one for his Einstein. Some people love them, some don't. When I got mine I wondered how much I would use it. That is all the time for me. It is a tool that works for me.
 
Been using one with the Herbert and it sounds good.

I would at least try it before completely dismissing it.

Hmm I think that you can`t fake the punch of the amp with a hot plate... Let the amp get loud and that`s it :rock:
 
I used THD HotPlate (4ohm) with VH4 and it works just fine, but no it is not the same as a freaking loud amp. I think I would use it still just because the amp is too loud, but unfortunately I changed my setup and now the impedances do not match.

My opinion is that attenuators are good for practicing and small & medium sized gigs, but unneccessary for recording (excl. appartment demo-recordings).
