These pickups came in a Knaggs Steckel I got. They are a copy of a set of PAFs from a 1960 Les Paul that steckel came across.
I expected to probably want to change them out because I usually like medium to medium/high output pickups. I like great touch sensitivity, clear articulation of notes, and pickups that clean up well. Even though these are lower output the touch sensitivity is great. Little effort is required to play, and they sound great. Clarity is great even when slamming power chords and the chuggah chuggah stuff is tight and the attack is fast.
When peeling the volume back, the clarity and tone is straight up spectacular. There is this sparkly thing going on that sounds soooo good. It reminds me of some of the cleaner tones in Led Zep songs.
When playing gain stuff, I have to use a little more gain than i normally would buy that doesn’t matter.
I usually change out pickups, but after playing these for a while, I definitely would not take them out. These pickups are definitely winners. They do good at everything I have thrown at them. I don’t know if I have turned into a pickup snob over the years, but I have taken a disliking to Duncan’s over the years. I don’t mind the Distortor Custom 5 I think it is, but Duncan got it out of the park with these even though I guess they just copied some old PAF’s. I just prefer other pickups over Duncan’s normally. Usually I like Suhr and BKP.
But, is anyone is thinking about grabbing an awesome set of PAF’s these are straight up awesome. And I am sure they will be a lot less than a set of Throwbacks, Wizz or BKP. If you are a PAF player or fan these will not disappoint.
