Duncan Pickups Mixtest JB vs. Distortion

Just goes to show what a difference a magnet makes. JB and Distortion use the same coils/winds. But the DD has a huge oversized ceramic in it. Seems to have more "push" after the notes are picked, to my ear.

I was very surprised as well. The Distortion with its Ceramic mag did seem to have a handful more 'mud' at lower bedroom jam volumes, but I think its that characteristic that helps the tone fill out nicely when the amp is cranked up loud like in these clips. The JB seemed a little tamer on the low end by comparison.

I really liked both of them..but the second clip is noticeably thicker.

yup, magnets swaps actually do make a noticable diffrence

i did this with the custom (ceramic) ,custom custom (A2), custom5 (A5) and custom8 (A8)
i settled on the A5...but even changing between diffrent A5 showed some diffrence (not as much thou)

Very interesting my friend! I am not much a fan of A5 mag tones in a bridge pickup to tell the truth, but I've been very curious about trying my own Duncan Custom using an A2 mag. What are your thoughts on the matter?

Ahh, I see that you edited your post. Thanks for listening!

The second on definitely sounds better, but then again you know how I feel about the J word ;) Nice avatar BTW, I like it much better than the bag lady

They both sound good to me. The JB sounds looser and not as thick, but to my ears has more character. The Distortion is thick and searing. Both sound cool.

The JB does sit well in a mix so I've found, really well in fact. I just really don't like its airiness, like even if you chug really hard it doesn't really chunk all that well, still sounds open and airy to me. I think the Ceramic mag helped it a lot in that regard, compresses it nicely too. Guess it's just more my jive.
