Hey guys i play a surh modern in standard tuning with 10-46 strings. My guitar has a floating gotoh 510 bridge "non" floyd. I would like to bounce between standard Eb and maybe frop d once in a while. I know i can't do this with a floating trem with out a few mods. My questions are...

1. Should i install a tremel no or just get a trem stopper that i can unscrew to re float the guitar. I have read so many different stories about tremel no's
2. Do you find it nesecessary to re intonate the guitar when the tuning is only a half step apart because i felt like i read somewhere that you don't have to?

3. should i just buy another suhr modern

Thank you!

I've got the same guitar and have had the same situation with a couple of bands I've been playing with. Played in Eb one night and standard the next night.

I didn't find it tricky to change between the tunings and the intonation wasn't noticeably off. Of course the action got a bit lower and the string bending was a bit different in terms of feel, but I wouldn't sweat it too much. I intonated the guitar after all the Eb to standard faffing was done and it's as good as usual.

Hope this helps!

In a perfect world having a second guitar(Well two. Need a backup for gigs!) set up in different tunings would be ideal. I've gone e to eb with my RG550 forever. Never sweat the intonation. Don't even unlock the nut. Ahead of time I've got the fine tuners ready for the travel needed. I prefer to keep it in e though. That's what it's set up for. That little bit of trem tilt sets of my ocd.

You should just buy another Modern. If fact, you should buy two in case you ever get the desire to tune in D. ;)

It's a trap! That's how I wound up with too many guitars. Quickly shut off your computer and put your credit cards in the freezer. RUN, RUN NOW!!

(Full disclosure, IMO you should buy another guitar)

To clarify, from hi to low strings:
  • standard Eb= Eb Bb Gb Db Ab Eb
    dropD= E B G D A D

You could get one of those drop tune pedals, but I hate those things. Even when they sound ok, they are always inferior + the guitar wood is resonating against the body in a different tuning than what you hear and can cause internal harmonic dissonance (I just made that up but it sounds right)

You could block off your tremolo to make it dive only, get a DTuna, tune to Eb then capo 1st fret to make E/dropD....but the fret markers will look weird for your patterns, unlike this idea....

tune to standard D/dropC, you can then easily pull off standard E/dropD with a capo on the 2nd fret.

But really the answer is: Yes, another guitar is needed.

I vote option 3.

I have a nice one for sale with a non recessed Floyd and a d tuna. Problem solved!

I'm looking to do something similar with my RG770DX, except the alternate tunings are a lot crazier. Half step down, drop D flat, and this crazy tuning I've been using (B F# C# F# A# D#). I'm hoping a tremol-no will do the trick.
